Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee quietly signed a bill last week that could result in some protesters losing their right to rock the vote.

The bill, which Gov. Lee signed into law Thursday, increases the penalties for people who illegally camp on state property to a Class E felony, punishable by up to six years in prison. Residents registered to vote in the state lose their right to vote if convicted of a felony.

The law will also implement a mandatory 45-day sentence for aggravated rioting, boosts the fine for blocking highway access to emergency vehicles and enhances the punishment for aggravated assault against a first responder to a Class C felony.

“This bill increases the punishment for illegal camping on state property from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class E felony with a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 days imprisonment and an order of restitution for any property damage or loss incurred as a result of the offense,” the bill, HB 8005 reads.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, told the Associated Press, it would be observing enforcement of the law.

“We are very disappointed in Governor Lee’s decision to sign this bill, which chills free speech, undermines criminal justice reform and fails to address the very issues of racial justice and police violence raised by the protesters who are being targeted,” ACLU of Tennessee Executive Director Hedy Weinberg said in a statement. “While the governor often speaks about sentencing reform, this bill contradicts those words and wastes valuable taxpayer funds to severely criminalize dissent.”

Shepard Smith: ”We got an anti mask protester on the phone. ”Let’s see what an anti masker's thoughts are on this tragedy.”
Governor Lee: "Who gives a fuck what a anti masker thinks at a time like this? This is ridiculous.

In all seriousness, this law seems reasonable IMO. I think (without knowing crap about Tennessee law) Governor Lee's intention is to increase the strength of existing laws to strengthen the deterrent? Also, Isn't it fairly easy to avoid illegally camping on state property, blocking highway access to emergency vehicles and not assaulting first responders? I know that's easy for me. I don't see an issue with idiots doing those things getting 30 days and loosing voting rights (they're opinion is trash anyway). That's just me. I see the concern I just don't see it concerning folks who do not illegally camp on state property, block highway access to emergency vehicles &/or assaults first responders

As an aside, I can't stand people who don't camp in designated camp spots. They often don't clean after themselves, leave litter and crap all over the place.

Pretty sure the camping thing is intended to even further disencfranchise homeless and/or evicted people.

What does it mean to "camp on state property"?

So, I can't speak much for Tennessee, but here in Minneapolis, there are plenty of homeless folks who camp out on state property with small camps tucked in the woods of public parks, usually out of sight hidden behind berms or I deeper clearings. First, this would criminalize such persons and I can't see that being well recieved by the courts, who have ruled against measures that would so criminalize homelessness.

That said, it seems that this is to target a criminalization measure at those who protest and maintain that protest on public property

I know what "camp" means in general... but my question was about what this legislation says "camp" means. Can you be "camped out" there once it is 12:01 AM and you arrived at 7:00 PM?
