The historicity of Zalmoxis and Zoroaster

Zalmoxis and Zoroaster are two religious characters that are on the fringe today, but once enjoyed significant numbers of devotees, and if history had turned out differently, they still would.

Both of these two have been alleged to have existed, but their origins are within the realm of legends. Both also seem to be protrayed as social and religious reformers. Do you think they did exist as historical persons? Is it possible to have an educated opinion on the matter?

I suspect that many of these types of ancient religious figures are probably an amalgamation of more than one person. And add to this, heroic stories that then evolve around these figures.
It seems to me that people tend to apply positive stories and characteristics to those they already admire.

Just like the instruments they use to compose their works, authors do not magically invent what they write or tell. An historical person? I'm always reminded of something we watch at the movies or on television that is preceded by "Based on actual events" or "inspired by actual events."

It sounds much like what we have about the Jesus character. Given a different historical direction these superheroes could be just as popular or more popular than the gospel protagonist.

Religion is not an outlet for history but rather an outlet for artistic and cultural expression. If we see religion as another art form it makes it easier to understand within human history.

I agree with the premise that many of these stories spring from known characters and then exaggerated over time.
