Experience is valuable, and the most qualified person for a job is usually the person who is already doing the job, but the power that comes with public service attracts corruption and the longer a person holds that power, the stronger the odds and strength of that corruption to take hold.
I'm from Nevada, and I thought Harry Reid was too old and entrenched too, but I voted for him because the Republicans had gone nuts and I believed he could win in a purple state. The fact that he had/has a legacy as one of the most powerful senators to ever serve also encouraged me to vote for him, but I wish that enticement didn't exist.
I don't actually know much about Rep. Young, but it sounds like he had been a congressperson for far too long.
