On Wednesday, September 24, 2014, “More than 120 Muslim scholars from around the world joined an open letter to the ‘fighters and followers’ of the Islamic State.” The signees represent the Sunni branch of Islam (with the exception of one Sufi person), and include important Muslim figures such as the former and current Grand Muftis of Egypt and the Muftis of Jerusalem, Bulgaria, Kosovo, and Malaysia. They live and teach on Islam in the Middle East, North, Central, and West Africa, Europe, North America, and the Far East. The letter relies heavily on the Qur’an and various “trustworthy” sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, as well as classical Sunni writings and interpretations. It attempts to rebut the ideology of ISIS with cardinal Islamic texts that ISIS itself has cited.

pfft ISIS members already have exposure to Islam and combined with this rebuttal ^here^ proves that Islam has to be regulated even by their own standards.
the ground work is already done, Islam unregulated is dangerous.
sad thing is nobody needs Islam and religious skepticism proves it and what makes it sad is Muslims and others would rather argue how to best regulate Islam and forget the obvious that religious skepticism cures the formation of ISIS like groups.

An open letter to Hitler would have been written in 1933, shortly after he was nominated Chancellor of the Reich and at a time the Nazi party was able to manipulate the Old Constitution of Weimar, muzzling the opposition.

I like the Open Letter not because I think it will do any good, rather that is demonstrates that there a SOME Islamic adherents who are not bat-shit-insane. When Christinanas start bitching about Muslims I like to tell them to take a look at their own history. The usually come back with the No true Scotsman fallacy and then I point out that ISIS are not true Muslims.

It may be a good rebuttal to people who are not absolutely committed to the Islamic State, but who think that it is a bunch of very good Muslims.

But I'm happy to see that here at last is an Islamist organization that many Muslims are willing to express dislike of.

Supposedly there are about 80,000 members of ISIL/ISIS.

Apparently they have a lot of US weapons. Way to go!!! USA #1!!!

This is what we have traded Saddam Hussein for.

But think of all those people who have become incredibly rich because of the non-stop wars for the past 13 years.

You'd think in 13 years of killing Muslims non-stop, you could kill enough Muslims to make the others scared.

Instead it pissed them off even more.

Members of ISIS who are 20 were 7 when the invasion of Afghanistan began and have lived through nothing but more and more violence against Muslims ever since. The US invasion of Iraq ignited what was long dormant sectarian hostilities in Iraq.

We say they are not rational. But I don't know what the rational reaction to all this violence would be? It might be to join the most insane gang around.

Is there a similar letter from such high ranking Islamic clerics that all of the following is true:

-Death penalty for apostates is NOT OK
-Women are equal to men and are not to be treated as second class citizens, that they should have total legal equality with men in both criminal and civil matters. Girls also have a right to the best education society can provide, equal to boys in this regard.
-Punishing people for being homosexual is NOT OK
-Rioting because someone somewhere in the world drew an offensive cartoon in a newspaper or made an offensive movie and posted it to youtube is NOT OK
-Criticizing Islam or any religion should NOT be illegal
-Punishing people for adultery is NOT OK. Punishing women for being alone with a man other than her husband, father or brothers is NOT OK. Honor killings are despicable.

Islam still has a lot of reforming to go through. Condemning ISIS is only a very small step in the right direction (it's not exactly hard to take such popular stance, ISIS is about as popular in the world as ebola - taking these very unpopular stances above in the Muslim world would demonstrate real courage).
