The Tories are now at their highest level in the polls for three years, while David Cameron's personal approval rating is his best for five years

What is driving their surge in popularity? Scotland must be regretting their decision not to break away from the UK.

Um.. just for context - the Telegraph is sometimes called the Torygraph - it is not a neutral source. That doesn't mean the information is wrong, simply that you need to be careful. In this case, while the conservatives are indeed in the lead, it's a pretty slim and volatile lead.

The main driving factor is that the economy is improving. That makes people feel good and support whoever is in charge.

Labour are not particularly popular - their leader lacks charisma, they haven't made a splash in terms of policy proposals. You'll note, however, that they're still almost as popular as the Tories.

Liberals have been hammered. The coalition with the conservatives is seen by their supports as being a bit of a sell-out, many of them are also unimpressed with the transition from party of ideas to party actually in power.

The big story is the huge rise in Other - showing a dissatisfaction with all the main parties, and the rise of UKIP (Kind of like teabaggers, expect hating Europe rather than the federal government, and without the guns and god theme), the Greens (ecological socialists), and the Scottish and to a lesser extent, Welsh, nationalists. UKIP take their support mainly from Conservatives, Greens from the Liberals, and Nationalist parties from Labour. Since UKIP and the Greens are doing better than the nationalists, and because there is a lot more to be gained from expressing support for regional nationalists than there is from voting for them, Labour will probably do better than the poll indicates.

Note that still leaves us potentially with another coalition government, something we're still really not used to.
