Wayne Shorter died this afternoon. He was 89. A real jazz great. He had just won a Grammy for his improvised jazz solo Endangered Species.
He played with Miles Davis, Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers, and Herbie Hancock. I first heard him play with the jazz fusion group Weather Report. I snuck onto the outdoor stage where Weather Report was doing a 2 song set - Boogie Woogie Waltz and 125th Street Congress - for 30 minutes of frenetic jazz. When it was over, they strode off the stage past a bunch of awe-struck teenagers (one of whom was me) - Wayne Shorter stopped to talk to us for about a minute. Nothing profound, but it really made an impression on me.
