Been watching this very interesting show on USA network Damnation. A period piece, but can see the political struggles echoed today.
Set in 1930’s small town in Iowa, the bank is forcing the local stores to set the price for produce so low, the farms are going bankrupt. Apparently part of a plan to grab the land cheaply. In response the farmers are staging a strike, refusing to deliver any food until they can get a fair price. They are lead by a ‘preacher’ who is trying to start a movement. Against them is the bank, the sherif, a group resembling the klan. Then throw into this a ‘strike breaker’ who kills one of the farmers in ‘self defence’, who also has a history with the preacher. The people trying to stand up for what is right are repeatedly accused of being communists.
I think it is a great series, showing a time when going on strike wasn’t just walking a picket line, but putting your life at risk.
