The Islamic State group lost its final sliver of territory in Syria, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces said Saturday while declaring victory over the extremists.

Mustafa Bali, a spokesman for the SDF, tweeted that the militant group, also known as ISIS, suffered "100 percent territorial defeat." He said that the eastern Syrian village of Baghouz, where jihadists had been mounting a last stand, "is free and the military victory against Daesh has been achieved." Daesh is ISIS' Arabic acronym.

Bali said that the self-declared caliphate that ISIS established in 2014, and which once sprawled across much of Syria and neighboring Iraq while imposing brutal rule on as many as 8 million people, had been eradicated. He said the SDF pledged to continue the fight against remnants of the extremist group until they are completely gone.

Saturday's announcement is significant. It marks the end of a 4 ½-year military campaign by an array of forces against the extremist group, which at its height in 2014 ruled an area the size of the United Kingdom, including several major cities and towns.

The announcement follows remarks by President Donald Trump after landing in Palm Beach, Fla., on Wednesday. "That’s what we have right now," he said while showing reporters a map comparing ISIS-held territory in Syria and Iraq in 2014 with today. The map indicated ISIS' diminished territory. It "will be gone by tonight," he said.

Mission Accomplished.

What a coincidence that this news would come out the day after Mueller's report was submitted.

Coincidence? I’m sure ISIS was trying hard not to be overrun before they could see the Mueller report. If there’s one group that’s totally obsessed about the Mueller report it’s ISIS.

Dude, you are such a sheep. Everyone knows that ISIS is run by Hillary Clinton and the CIA and is just a propaganda arm of the Deep State.

Hmm, it’s quite a coincidence that you’d say that the day after the Mueller report came out.

Coincidence?

Hey, look at that! That is indeed the word I used.

I’m sure ISIS was trying hard not to be overrun before they could see the Mueller report.

Too bad you missed the other words I used, like "this news would come out." I know it's difficult for you, but re-read the OP. Here, I'll dumb it WAAAY down for you:

The announcement follows remarks by President Donald Trump after landing in Palm Beach, Fla., on Wednesday. "That’s what we have right now," he said while showing reporters a map comparing ISIS-held territory in Syria and Iraq in 2014 with today. The map indicated ISIS' diminished territory. It "will be gone by tonight," he said.

So, iow, he was referring to it being "gone" on Wednesday, which probably meant it was already "gone," but, you're right, maybe he was so fucking stupid as to announce active military plans before they happened as he's done previously.

Regardless, that still would mean that the final push would have happened that night and probably bled into Thursday, but if, as Trump boasted, it was that close, they likely would have known it was over by Thursday morning, or afternoon at the latest. Maybe a few stragglers, but certainly they would have been able to comfortably predict/announce the outcome in spite of that and report that it was all over by Thursday evening.

It is a sure bet that at the beginning of last week (if not sooner), Trump knew Mueller was wrapping up his report and was preparing to deliver it by this weekend (Friday would be the logical guess, since that's exactly when he's made such moves pretty much throughout the entire investigation).

But let's hedge and say Trump's little minions--like, you know, the Attorney General--informed him on Monday, or even Tuesday that Mueller's team are showing definite signs of completion and the report will be delivered imminently.

So, he knows by Wednesday that the report is completed and will be delivered soon. At the same time, he says the above about Syria, but there is no mention of the outcome on Thursday morning; noon; afternoon; early evening; late evening; night; etc. You know, like during ANY news slots in our 24 hour news delivery paradigm we now find ourselves within?

So maybe it took all of Thursday to complete the mission. Likewise, no mention of it Friday morning; Friday noon; Friday after noon; etc.

Mueller's report is delivered early friday evening. Unusual radio silence from the WH all Friday evening/night. Very next morning, this is revealed.

Why are you trying so hard to distract attention away from the Mueller report by talking about all the other things that happened the same day the Mueller report came out? Your agenda is showing, dude. If we weren’t focusing so hard on all these other things which happened the same day that the Mueller report came out, we’d totally call you out on that.

What? Does all-powerful Allah know he and his most ardent followers got their asses kicked? How do Muslims justify following such a weak god, that can be defeat by a poorly run coalition that included despots of the world?

Allah always answers their prayers. It's just that sometimes the answer is "No! You're a weird and crazy group of psychotic morons, so stop calling me!"

To be fair, Allah was probably too busy reading the Mueller report to help ISIS as much as he normally would have.

ISIS is finally WASWAS

Not quite:

Even before an American-backed Kurdish and Arab militia ousted the last extremist fighters from the eastern Syrian village of Baghuz on Saturday, the Islamic State had shifted gears. The organization that once staked out a self-proclaimed caliphate across Iraq and Syria has now metastasized into a more traditional terrorist group — an atomized, clandestine network of cells engaged in guerrilla attacks, bombings and targeted assassinations.

Thousands of American troops are helping the Afghan Army and security forces combat the Islamic State and other terrorist groups in Afghanistan. Armed American drones are hunting Islamic State cells in Libya. And American forces are advising and providing intelligence to local troops fighting the Islamic State in Burkina Faso and in the Philippines.

Thousands of Islamic State fighters are also still at large in Iraq and Syria, biding their time to rearm and regroup to strike the same regions again. Many of them slipped out or surrendered when the final wave of civilians fled Baghuz, American commanders and intelligence analysts said.

“What we are seeing now is not the surrender of ISIS as an organization — but in fact a calculated decision to preserve the safety of their families and preservation of their capabilities,” Gen. Joseph L. Votel, the head of the military’s Central Command, told lawmakers this month about the exodus from Baghuz.

“The ISIS population being evacuated from the remaining vestiges of the caliphate largely remains unrepentant, unbroken and radicalized,” he said.
...
officials believe the loss of the Islamic State’s physical territory will not prevent it from striking again.

“The group’s leadership and foot soldiers see this as a setback, not a defeat,” Nathan Sales, the State Department’s counterterrorism coordinator, said in a speech this month about the Islamic State’s territorial defeat. “They’re actively working to continue the fight from ISIS’s worldwide branches and networks.”

The beat goes on.
