Merged Greenland is part of NATO via Denmark

Indigenous people of Alaska earn on average less than half of that of Whites. This is reflected in a gini coefficient of .4376. The gini coefficient of Greenland is .339. While this is higher than that of Denmark mainland, it is considerably better than Alaska in terms of equality.

While it is true about an __average__ income being higher in Alaska, we have to look at who is getting the money and what it is spent on. We can see from these figures that it isn't an even distribution of wealth. Moreover, if Trump annexes Greenland, he's not going to be passing around ownership of oil to indigenous people. It won't be the same situation as Venezuela, but it's also not going to be indigenous owned oil companies. Indigenous people will get jobs working for oil companies and in the mines. Will they maintain a right to unionize? Will they need that extra money to pay for their most expensive US healthcare in the world? There are healthcare disparities between indigenous people in Greenland and Danish, but there are also extreme disparities between indigenous people in Alaska and non-hispanic Whites. At least in Greenland, it is free.

The economic conclusion is one of very high risk and uncertainty. This is a case of The Devil You Know...

I'm not arguing against any of this. Sure. But its a question if negotiation. Because of the Greenland oil Trump can make a deal that would benefit the inuit.

My point is that there's a fully legal way for Trump to nab Greenland that won't risk ww3. So that's obviously how he'd do it.

Me personally, I like that Trump is putting pressure on Denmark to show the inuit some love. The Danes take them for granted. I don't that Trump is doing it. But there's a silver lining.

The Faroese are fully integrated into Denmark. But they are Vikings and speak Danish. There are zero high school level educations in the Aleut language. Its not a good look imho. Its blatantly unfair.

Fun fact. I know the guy who is the de facto finance minister of Greenland. Its just a Copenhagen based accountant. Its just a guy. Not a special guy. A completely anonymous guy doing this as a side hustle at his regular accounting job. That's how small Greenland is.

I think it’s cute someone believes Trump secretly wants to help the Inuit people of Greenland.
I saw an interview with AZ Senator Ruben Gallego, and as he often does, he cut through the bullshit. Plain and simple, Trump sees Greenland as a big island and a way for part of his "legacy" to brag about how he expanded the territory of the US for the first time in generations. He probably doesn't even know that most of it is uninhabited. He just wants a big new "piece of America."

DrZoidberg, your naivety continues to astound with how great is its growth rate. If you want a crate of milk, you can purchase it from the farm, you don't have to buy the whole farm. Greenlanders do not want to be part of the USA. It would be like offering a hero to join a NY gang.
Denmark and Greenland have already offered talks to the USA (specifically Marco Rubio) to talk about sales of rare earths and other things.

I live in Denmark and I can say that Europe and the Danes are completely delusional. Denmark gave Greenland home rule in 1979. Ie indipendence. The Greenland parliament do not need to ask Denmark for permission to secede and join USA. Historically, Denmark has treated the inuit similarly to how USA has treated their indians. Not good. The inuit are still treated as the weirdos up north. There's plenty living in Copenhagen. But they're not welcome in the regular Danish workforce. Alcoholism and social problems are rampant. While Greenlanders are proudly Danish. I doubt that Danish patriotism runs deep. Denmark certainly hasn't earned it.

Denmark is one of the last European countries where the carbon net zero goal isn't just something politicians say. It's actual policy. Denmark has promised to never tap Greenland for oil and seem to mean it. While Alaska is USA's richest state per capita. Greenland and Alaska are quite similar in that they sit on massive oil reserves and have tiny populations. My guess is that Trump has made the accurate observation that the Greenland inuit are being screwed over by the Danish government.

The stuff Trump is saying now.. it's just noise. The only realistic way Trump can take Greenland is to make an offer to the Greenland parliament that is better than the shit Denmark is offering them, and then let democracy happen. So that's obviously the way it will happen... if it will happen. No WW3. No NATO problem.
Trump is blundering around in the Western Hemisphere like a megalomaniac sociopath (sociopathic megalomaniac?). Trump doesn't have a sense of empathy and he sucks at deals that require any sense of symbiosis. So no, the US isn't providing Greenland anything they'll find great.

Worse yet, Greenland isn't about resources. It is about shutting the NW Passage off from Europe. The US doesn't need Greenland, we can always come up with some sort of arrangements on minerals or oil. Russia wants the US to control access to the NW Passage and keep it from Europe (because they lack the power to do so themselves), which requires the US having access to Greenland territory.
I still think Trump is a cunt. But thought there was some nuance missing from the general discussion on this. While Trump is a moron. He's not quite as moronic as people think.
He is much dumber than people think. We are currently in the 21st century. Energy, superconductors, rare earth elements, and access to clean water are the critical things moving into the future. Trump is wandering around like the Japanese Empire who needs to seize oil assets to make their imperialism possible.

Nobody thinks that or have said that
Does “I like that Trump is putting pressure on Denmark to show the inuit some love.” ring a bell?

You somehow failed to read the explicit caveat directly afterwards. Which I added in case someone would have a weak reading comprehension

Directly afterwards is "The Danes take them for granted. I don't that Trump is doing it. But there's a silver lining." followed by pointless ambles about the Faroes and then some accountant.

If that is what you think is an explicit caveat, I'm not the one with weak reading comprehension.

Jimmy, I have to disagree, but we have no idea what Trump really thinks. You cannot take whatever he says at face value. I wish we could, but unless his statement means he will personally receive a tangible reward, you just cannot take it face value.

So he has said in the past that making Greenland part of the US was for strategic reasons. And maybe he even it meant it before his observable mental decline kicked in. But now, it's anyone guess what goes on in that brain of his.

True, but he is not alone in his administration.

I'm basing my opinion on what Trump has done, his personality / flaws.

The guy is being used as a marionette puppet by Putin. All of Trump's decision in Europe are to Russia's advantage. Putin wants a weaker Europe. The strategic value of Greenland with the current set up is south and east (GIUK gap). Putin wants the north occupied and held off to access for Europe to continue his attempt to weaken Europe.

I have no idea if anyone is in charge in the Administration in whole. Miller is working on the 21st Aryan project domestically. There are the Heritage Foundation folks working on dismantling the Executive Branch's regulation processes. Otherwise, it feels like no one is in charge and Trump being marinetted about, doing things that very clearly are not in our nation's best interests. I think the oil companies today and telling Trump that he is fucking nuts about them going in to Venezuela.

The other uncertainty is what is the heck is going on with the GOP. Are they fearing him or is our democracy done and they are busy scoping out their slice of the pie?

I was waiting for "Russia did it!"
Deal with it. Trump is doing Putin's bidding. I mean, unless you want to suggest Russia just by sheer luck benefits from all of the changes in US policies in Europe.

Its too early to say what the Greenlanders think. I'm guessing this will be a topic next election. They'll be asking what's in it for Greenland to stick with Denmark. A very good question, they will struggle to answer.

Trump has now opened the door, and Greenland is free to secede at any point.
I'm sure Greenland will look at Puerto Rico and think, 'yeah, this will be great!'

I suspect they will look at Alaska
