Yet another war, this time with Iran

Is that the same Lindsey Graham who said that electing Trump would destroy the Republican Party and that they would deserve it?
That was before Trump showed Lady G pictures of himself screwing little boys

So many Republicans did complete 180s on Trump. He must have a crapton of dirt on so many of them.

Khamenei's son named next Supreme leader making it seem like Iran isn't going to just give up. Ready the Truth Social tantrum.

So Iran has appointed Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the new supreme leader. Another hardliner.

What has Trump accomplished?
First move in the game of Whack-a-Mullah?

Not good news for Iranians. He is thought to be even more radical than the elder Khamenei. And he is likely to be extra cranky given that his wife was apparently killed in the same airstrike that killed his father.

This is bad news for the people of Iran. First the sewers of Tehran are literally on fire, and now this guy gets put in charge. Hopefully, he is the next hit in the game of Whack-a-Mullah.

Derec, you don't seem to know fuck all about human beings and how they react to things.

Trump's actions are making it harder, not easier. Trump and Netanyahu just made the lives of Iranians harder.

Brute force from the air doesn't do much. Ask Russia, Israel, and now Israel/USA.

It isn't unconstitutional to be wrong.
Did I say it was?
That these people can have these views and not be thrown in jail is supposed to be the keystone to our nation's existence.
Did I say that they should be?
That their vote counts as much as any other, and their political opinions can be completely fucked up, and be drowned out by better ideas is what makes made this country great.
Maybe we should stop importing Islamists and giving them citizenships. The Muslim population of NYC skyrocketed since 9/11, to the point that the city is now run by a Muslim whose wife liked a post praising the 10/7 atrocities.
Those people are doing a hell lot less damage to the US with this ridiculous vigil than the right-wing has in the last couple decades.

Hegseth's Christian Nationalist speech the other day should be making people shit in their pants with worry about where this Admin is moving to.
Classic whataboutism. We should be able to discuss islamoleftism without the "but what about right-wing Christians" objections.

In a country with over 300 million people, there are bound to be people like that. FFS, there are magnitudes more people who think Trump is a good President or that someone rose from the dead to save us from our sins.
This pro-Islamism view is widespread on the far Left. After 10/7, there were also protests by Democratic Socialists of America and other left-wing groups praising the Hamas "resistance".

Different people react to things differently. There is no universal rule.

Dismantling regimes like Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan led to peaceful and prosperous Germany and Japan. So, it's possible.
And the regime has been very unpopular, in no small part because they are incompetent and corrupt, which makes lives of people, especially in Tehran difficult on a practical level, quite apart from the oppression.
But at the same time, the regime and IRGC are very entrenched and difficult to remove from power.
Trump's actions are making it harder, not easier.
I do not see how it could be any harder. We saw widespread protests that the regime brutally put down, killing thousands, and possibly 10s of thousands.
At the same time, you have the nuclear program and stockpiling of missiles and drones, as well as their support for foreign terrorists like Hamas and Hezbollah.
Trump and Netanyahu just made the lives of Iranians harder.
War is hell, yes. But if it leads to the removal of the regime, at least Iran has a chance at a good future.

Force from the air can reduce the threat Iran poses. It can weaken the IRGC forces. But, it is true, air power alone is not enough. There needs to be local opposition that can take over a weakened regime.

Bullshit. Fucking bigots see anything other than their virulent bigotry as supporting all the bullshit they are bigoted against. You want to treat a group fairly then you are automatically supporting all the bad shit the bigot assigns to the entire group. The bigots are tiresome.

What terms would we even demand, if Iran accepted unconditional surrender for some inexplicable reason? We have no clearly stated goals in their country.
Exactly.

And with whom could we entrust those demands if we had any? Every Iranian who gets into a position where he could, if he wished, order a ceasefire gets killed in short order.

At this point, it seems unlikely that the IRGC forces would stop firing drones even if ordered to do so by Tehran, because they would have no certainty that such orders come from a legitimate ruler or ruling body.

As the unit commanders are fundamentalists, chosen for their beligerence and commitment to the Islamic Revolution, they are likely to regard a ceasefire order as strong evidence that the order is not legitimate.

I don't think anyone can put the lid back on the box at this point, and I see no evidence that either Trump or Netanyahu are particularly concerned about trying.

This has all the makings of a very long war indeed, and one from which the US can withdraw only with serious loss of face, and from which the regional allies of the US (including Israel, but also the various arab nations) cannot withdraw at all.

Iran has form for simply never giving in. Back during the Iran/Iraq war, they were outgunned and outmatched in every way except sheer numbers by the Iraqis, but just refused to quit, even in the face of overwhelming firepower against which they were armed with two rifles for every three soldiers.

And Iranian geography is a defender's dream, and an invader's nightmare.

I took this photograph almost exactly a year ago; It is looking into Iran from above the Iraqi border. The whole damn country looks like this; One impenetrable mountain ridge after another, as far as the eye can see from 40,000 feet.

If Cyrus could conquer it...
Cyrus started in Persia, he wasn't trying to get in from outside, against a determined defence. And his opponents didn't have guns.

Terry Pratchett (Sourcery) said:
"My father always said that it was pointless to undertake a direct attack against an enemy extensively armed with efficient projectile weapons,” she said.
Rincewind, who knew Cohen’s normal method of speech, gave her a look of disbelief.
“Well, what he actually said,” she added, “was never enter an arse-kicking contest with a porcupine.”

Big deal. They are irrelevant. As far as I can tell, the only effect they have is get you to point them out.

Absent ground troops occupying the country, no Mr. Rogers type can take over Iran. The only ones with the power are those with the guns, and that’s the IRGC. The more hard line the better as far as they’re concerned. Anyone else they'd kill.
^ This.

Anyone who takes power that is acceptable to IRGC will be killed by the IDF or USAF. Anyone else will be killed by the IRGC.

It's a recipe for anarchy, in a country where all the guns and the drones and the missiles are in the hands of fanatics. What could possibly go wrong?

How many successive leaders can we kill before it starts to become generally unpopular?

I think it's safe to say the U.S. won't wage total war on Iran.
Do you honestly believe a single person in this administration gives a flying fuck about the "suckers and losers" in the US military?
No. Trump cares about retaining power. That requires a tame Congress. His ratings are low and midterm GOP loses loom. The Iranian war becomes less and less popular with his base with an increase in US body bags.

This war is a gamble to increase his support. He will talk loud but carry a small stick.
Well, the worse the war is going, the better his chances of getting away with declaring it an emergency that requires the suspension of elections.

Looks like Malcolm X
looks like only half a dozen people showed up. So why should we care?

Killing Khamenei was a dumb strategy. It's good that he's dead, but it was nevertheless dumb to kill him. It's not like he was particularly irreplaceable, as we have seen. Killing him just puts someone even more fanatical in charge, and gives them another grudge against Israel and America to add to the pile.

That depends what "it" is - Killing? Leadership? Succession?

I don't think there's any shortage of Islamic fanatics in Tehran, nor can one be created without genocide. |

Trump, Bibi, and MAGA might be OK with genocide, but I doubt that genocide has much depth of support in the US, outside the 'MAGA / Dominionist /Let's bring on Armageddon' bubble.

So I did lose it in the coffee shop after all. An elderly gentleman sat down next to me and I just blurted out that I think Trump is the dumbest motherfucker ever along with anyone who ever voted him. Fortunately he laughed and agreed. He turned out to be a Vietnam veteran and couldn’t believe the stupidity of going to war. He kept comparing it to the escalation in Vietnam and how the Marines went in just to guard an airbase in Danang in 1965. That’s true. That was the original mission other than special forces and advisors.

I guess I was lucky he wasn’t some MAGA nut. I am in Alabama.
