Russia claims the jet was in Syrian airspace the whole time. Turkey claims they warned the plane for violating their airspace.

A Russian Su-24 fighter has been shot down in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry said, adding the plane hadn’t violated Turkish airspace and was flying at an altitude of 6,000 meters.
“During the flight, the aircraft was flying within the borders of Syria, which was registered by objective monitoring data,” the ministry said, adding that the aircraft was "supposedly shot down from the ground.”

Turkish presidential sources told Reuters that the warplane shot down by Turkey was a "Russian-made" SU-24, adding that it was downed in line with Turkey's rules of engagement after violating Ankara's airspace. Turkish media previously reported that the presidential sources have confirmed the plane was a Russian jet, but then clarified that this was simply in reference to the fact that the downed aircraft is reported in the media to be a Russian plane.
In a statement, the Turkish military said a plane of unknown origin was shot down after it violated Turkish airspace despite repeated warnings. The aircraft was warned 10 times in five minutes, the military said.
It said two Turkis F-16s were involved in the shooting down of the jet.

The Turkish army released an image of the alleged violation. 10 warnings in 5 minutes seems impossible to believe.

One pilot apparently was killed by Syrian rebels. And it all points toward premeditated shoot-down by Turkey.
I mean if picture is is correct then Russian most likely were routinely cutting into that piece of Turkey, because there is simply no way to avoid it. It's only 15 seconds of flying. And Turkey or NATO decided to send a message. Pretty depressing.

And now Dave Cameron wants to join the party, thinks he's missing out on the action! Yeah right, this Syria thing is looking like another Iraq - just arm Assad and let him sort it out

1. Let's hope the world has learned something since June 28, 1914. Jesus.
2. Nightmare: the red-faced ranter who always looks like he's choking on a chunk of sirloin -- just imagine him in charge of our Middle East policy. Double Jesus. EEEEEuge.

Well, Turkey should have the radar data and Russia should have the black box, so it'll be easy enough to determine where the plane was.

Now, that being said, was shooting it down really necessary, even if it was a legal action due to Russia committing an act of war by having it's military enter Turkish airspace without permission? They knew damn well that the plane was actually on its way to attack another country, so strafing around it with machine gun fire the first few times it happens would be a wiser course of action rather than jacking shit up to the next level blowing them out of the sky.

This was not the first time the Russkis have entered Turkish air space over the last few weeks and the Turks have registered their complaints to Russia over that. Looks like the Turks decided to make sure that the Russians get the message thus time in no uncertain terms.

Plane fell 4 km into Syrian territory. And Russia claims it never got closer than 1 km to Turkey.
Also it was returning to base so, there were no point in flying through Turkey.

Ya, but what I'm saying is that there are perhaps middle steps between "registering complaints" and "blowing them out of the sky". I'm not saying that they didn't have the legal right to do so, but that their doing it just makes everything worse.

I'm not taking a position on where it was. That's something which can be determined without resorting to opinions or incomplete data, since complete data is available. If the pilot thought he was a kilometer outside of Turkey but Turkish radar shows that he was actually five feet over the border, then they have the right to shoot him down.

Turkish owned.

Turkey can't make these jets. They were supplied by another. Another nation selling weapons like a madman.

So what happens if Assad tells the US to stay out of Syrian airspace and allows its ally Russia to enforce its sovereignty?

Do military planes even have black boxes? Sounds like a security risk. Besides Russia wouldn't have it anyway because the plane fell to rebel territory.

Yes, I warning might have sufficed.
