No not the kind of drones that give operators PTSD, but real autonomous killer robots that seek and kill people.

What is a killer robot? It's a self-directed robot that can be programmed to target and kill people without human intervention. They don't exist yet. But they're coming.

It may sound like some sort of fantasy, dystopian scenario. But Berkeley computer science professor Stuart Russell says technology from drones and self-driving cars could easily be harnessed to make killer robots a reality within the next two years.

Carr warns that automated killer robots are "just as dangerous and potentially lethal" as nuclear weapons.

I am more worried about robots replacing people at ordinary jobs.
I see a uture with a lot of unemployed doctors.

If a robot replaces you in your job, what good are you? You're just sucking up resources.

You could train for another job, like repairing robots so that they'll last longer and won't need to be replaced by some useless and inefficient human.

And if one robot is as productive as 50 humans but only requires 5 for upkeep and maintenance, what do the other 45 do?

You think that is the trouble? The robots will run into bigger issues, when larger human killing robots are created that can kill as many humans as 50 older human killing robots. The last thing humans need is a war amongst human killing robots.

Well, seems like if they provide the upkeep for 9 additional robots we get 10x as much stuff.

They don't exist?

There are anti-radiation missiles that can hover over a target area waiting for an emitter to show up. The missile engages on it's own once it sees a radar. (This is to defeat the tactic of a mobile radar running away while a missile is inbound.)

Humans haven't evolved radar yet.

I think it's no longer science fiction to replace "radar detector" with a camera and a system to detect when a human shows up. Maybe even a facial recognition to ensure it's the right human, within some margin of error. Bonus points if you can make the missile say "you have twenty seconds to comply" before it hits its target.

Until someone actually does it, and it works, it's science fiction. Also, until that missile can fire itself, it's not autonomous.

They can be used for target practice. Just because the weapons systems are on a robot doesn't mean that they suddenly don't need calibration from time to time. It's called quality control and it's what lets your killer robots win the fight against the other guy's killer robots.

Should we develop robots first that are capable of tracking and destroying human killing robots before making human killing robots?

Yeah, but what is going to kill the killer robots killers?

This is a valid concern. We need to invest in radioactive super-monkey research as soon as possible.

Oh really? You think that is bad? Actually, drone warfare comes extremely close to the last thing we need. The human operators of these are just a temporary backup for when these devices can be made more autonomous. We have no way of knowing how many kills any one drone has to its credit, but somebody does. The problem is looking to stack up a whole bunch of kills an imagine that that makes you somehow "good." We never seem to learn that our policies should not be driven by our raw animal passions and machines designed to satisfy these are far more capable of destruction than we are ourselves...unless you count the making of the drones or robots as OUR ACTION.
