In a bid to minimise the effects of the migration crisis on Europe MEPs agreed to replace the union’s border agency, Frontex, with a new European Border and Coast Guard Agency (EBCG), which will be granted more powers.

The passport-free Schengen area - which the UK is not part of - has been blamed on allowing terrorists, people traffickers and economic migrants to travel freely across the continent.

483 MEPs voted to bring in the new plans this autumn, while 181 voted against and 48 abstained.

The re-introduction of border controls is bizarrely being trumpeted as a victory for the EU, despite the Schengen agreement being seen as one of the bloc’s success stories.

EU rapporteur, Artis Pabrics, said: "The European Border and Coast Guard Regulation will ensure that the EU external borders are safer and better managed.

“This is not a silver bullet that can solve the migration crisis that the EU is facing today or fully restore trust in the Schengen area, but it is very much needed first step.”

Despite the inconvenience, I think those with passports from EU,European countries and the UK may only need to quickly show the passport and go through. The purpose is to check those with no EU passport, or perhaps no passport.

I don't think this "introduces border controls", as it is still up to member states to check papers at the border if they choose to do so.

Sure at the airports, but they just check for a EU passport to make the person is going through the correct lane. Often the guard hasn't even opened the passport and barely looked at the cover
I sometimes think that If someone just stuck his pecker out they'd let him through. Virtually nothing on the roads and trains. We don't live in an ideal world so regrettably borders must tightened up and possibly we may be inconvenienced with longer searches now and again.

My point was that this ruling does absolutely nothing to change that.

Why did they vote on this issue if this not change anything, or does it suggest this was a waste of EU parliament time.

The bill is about reorganizing external border control and increasing coordination. It has very little to do with internal borders, because countries that wish to close them could do so, and have done so, anyway.

Inevitably there will be an effect on internal borders, to catch those who have managed to get through external borders, which should not have been made lax in the first place.

The article does state Under the plans national authorities will still manage their borders on a day-to-day basis but if their external borders are under pressure they will be able to urgently call in the EBCG. There is concern regarding the Paris attacks and indications are there will be stricter controls between the member states.
