BURLINGTON, Vt., Nov. 9 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement Wednesday after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States:

“Donald Trump tapped into the anger of a declining middle class that is sick and tired of establishment economics, establishment politics and the establishment media. People are tired of working longer hours for lower wages, of seeing decent paying jobs go to China and other low-wage countries, of billionaires not paying any federal income taxes and of not being able to afford a college education for their kids - all while the very rich become much richer.

“To the degree that Mr. Trump is serious about pursuing policies that improve the lives of working families in this country, I and other progressives are prepared to work with him. To the degree that he pursues racist, sexist, xenophobic and anti-environment policies, we will vigorously oppose him.”

Sanders says it all.

Trump is so serious about it, that he's keeping his clothing companies in Thailand and China.

If you liked Sanders, you have to love Trump.

Both Sanders and Trump feed off the widespread hallucination that cheap labor is bad for the economy.

Trump carries it a step farther by applying it to immigrant labor, but otherwise the two demagogues are the same -- telling the mob what they want to hear.

Cheap labour is bad for those who work long hard hours for little real benefit to themselves, spending a significant portion of their one and only life in toil, but provides great a great benefit to those who actually profit from that time, effort and labour.

Trump opposes raising the minimum wage.

Infrastructure investment or jobs bills are not on Congress' agenda.

Working class people will benefit the least from Trump; in fact they'll be worse off.

If Obamacare goes, 24M will lose health insurance. Every scheme the corporatocracy can come up to increase fees and charges etc. will be supported enthusiastically. Not going to be pretty.

Yeah, sure...this is the guy who legally imported hospitality workers for his uber expensive club in Florida...cuz he just couldn't find enough dedicated minimum wage workers. I don't think his party, which controls both houses has got the memo on this either.

I hope they have lots of energy....as I think the odds will tilt this way.

Statements like the one made by Sen. Sanders are meant to declare his own intents, not acknowledge the sincerity of Trump's position. Give the guy some credit, how 'bout?

I think you mis-understood my point...I said nothing about Sanders, other than I hope he (as part of the "they have lots of energy") has lots of energy; as I think he is going to need it. FWIW, I found Sanders comments to be generally spot on.

If, and that is a big IF, Trump wants to push for significant infrastructure spending he will have a big cat fight with his own party over it. Will he really want to spend his little election capital on this fight, when he could push for tax cuts for the rich? And I'm sure the Repugs will be consumed as well with shredding Obamacare, which should consume lots of time and energy. Just what will Trump be doing to improve the lot of those 'working families'? Then there is that little problem of the March 16th debt ceiling wall; and getting a neanderthal into the SC...those first 100 days should be interesting.

Fair enough, apologies for my misunderstanding.

Both Sanders and Trump feed off the widespread hallucination that cheap labor is bad for the economy.

Trump carries it a step farther by applying it to immigrant labor, but otherwise the two demagogues are the same -- telling the mob what they want to hear.

Is the purpose of an economy to turn some into the low paid slaves of others?

That seems an invented purpose.

Invented by the rich.

I was under the impression that the purpose of an economy was to distribute goods and service throughout a society in an equitable and efficient manner.

But then what do I know, I'm not an economist like everyone else.

That is almost a summary that an economist would except the equitable part, just a way to distribute goods and services. Some people see the only purpose of an economy is to provide jobs.

What Sander's doesn't get is the the white Union members in the rust belt who helped Trump win are strongly opposed to 99% of what Sanders believes and wants.
They don't want a minimum wage, and oppose taxes for almost everything, and oppose most programs for the poor, and oppose free education (and education in general) .
It was a select group of the "working class" that Trump conned into supporting him.

All they care about is what Trump falsely promised them and cannot possibly deliver, which is a return of the highly paid Union manufacturing jobs that were where they live. They have a total disconnect between the government intervention that would entail and any other form of economic regulations.

The purpose is the purpose we give to it.

Presently the purpose is to provide a casino where rich investors with inside information can get richer.

A place where the few can play with the lives of the many.
