Hi,

Over the years I have noticed that politicians seem to like coming up with rules and regulations and then applying these to the public at large. This has happened so often that I am beginning to suspect a pattern.

Why do they do this? A new politician appears, gets elected and then they have to do all the rule making stuff. They usually say that everything is bad and has to be changed. But, if there have been successions of politicians before them, why is everything still bad? I just don't get it. Also, why are the changes nearly always about more rules and regulations?

A wise pundit once said that politicians are like dogs, p****** on the previous scent to mark it with their own scent.

Is this it? Is this what politics is about? P******?

Alex.

They have to appear to be doing something. Appearing to be doing something is better than not seeming to not be doing anything.

Everyone has their own personal idea of "what ought to be" and no two people agree on everything. The difference between non-politicians and politicians is that the politicians have the power to pass laws or regulations that force everyone else to accept their world views or suffer the consequences.

And then there are the self serving politicians that enact regulations that benefit themselves, friends, family, and backers.

To be good is noble; but to show others how to be good is nobler and no trouble. - Mark Twain

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. - HL Mencken

dismal,

Well, your post is certainly in keeping with our popular newspapers in the UK.

I'd say that politicians come up with all these rules because he reason they became politicians in the first place is due to the fact that they think government has a role to play in society and they want to help it play that role as best they can. They may fail to do that a lot, but their motivations are likely good ones for the most part.

Tom,

Who could disagree with such a kindly and generous sentiment?

Because they're voted in on campaign promises to sort out the banks, tax dodgers, Rupert Murdoch, lobbyists, etc, who turn out to be pretty much above the law. So they regulate the little guy instead to look as if they're doing something.

If some big construction or oil company has a spate of accidents, safety regulation is strictly enforced ..in libraries and schools.

If they were elected to Congress or a legislature this is the job that they are elected to do. To write laws and regulations.

We have had a lot of these types of threads over the years complaining about politicians and too many malicious regulations. We have also had threads complaining about politicians who don't do anything, for example, the do-nothing Congress that has four day weekends.

It seems to be easy to complain without being specific. Could you provide us with examples of what you are talking about? A list of regulations that are examples of what you are complaining about in the OP. Regulations passed that have no purpose other than to piss on a previous politician's regulations.

Actually I have one. Let's see if you do as well. If not we can discuss mine. How Congress undercut ObamaCare and forced insurance companies to abandon the exchanges or to propose dramatic premium increases.
