Jerry Drake Varnell allegedly told undercover investigators that he hoped his actions would "cripple the government" and cause a "revolution".
The criminal complaint alleges that shortly after midnight on Saturday he attempted to set off a fake bomb.
Speaking to undercover agents, he cited the film Fight Club and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing as inspiration.

This is why we can't let Muslims into our country folks! Wait, what...?

Wait, so he used Fight Club as an inspiration and yet told people about the plot, thus breaking the first rule of Fight Club? They mention the rule 536 times during the movie, so how the fuck did he miss it?

Looks like someone needs to have his balls cut off.

Brad Pitt must be thoroughly disappointed...

So we wander back down the road of Is It Great FBI Work or FBI Entrapment. So instead of trying to talk him down, they help him out and possibly push him towards this.

*snip so as not to mention it*

And you mention it yourself in your own post, TWICE!!!

GET HIM!!! :angryfist:

How do you get help for someone when you can't prove there's a problem yet? There's the rub. Talking down also runs the risk of relapse. Hard to get a second chance at glory when serving a life sentence.

Why would they want to talk him down? If somebody is the type of person for whom "set off a bomb in the middle of a city" is a potential action to take then I want that guy removed from society. Giving him a fake bomb which he thinks is real and have him try to blow it up in order to show the clear evidence against him is a pretty good solution.

The operation took months. Anything that takes that long would seem to mean the threat isn't imminent or real. Does FBI ever try to dissuade him or continually drag him on?

This isn't the BLM occupation. The guy hasn't committed a crime until the FBI helps him commit a crime.

Well, there's a difference between a sting operation and entrapment. If he was planning on bombing something and the FBI simply had him deal with them instead of actual bomb makers, then it's a positive operation.

I was just going to say the same thing. It's better he gets a fake bomb from undercover feds than a real one from a militia group.

A sting operation involves going undercover into a known crime syndicate or what not. Doesn't that usually mean the guy is going to or in the process of committing a crime? Had he committed a crime before the FBI got involved?

I'm giving this guy no credit whatsoever, when given the chance, he moved forward with an attempt to harm. But my question is, was he ever getting to that point without the FBI intervening?

I'm wondering what number he dialed, just a random one given to him, or was it to an FBI field office, prison?

That guy's nuts! Grab 'em!

I remember Thom Hartmann telling the story of when he was in SDS at Michigan State University, they had one guy that always tried to get them to commit violence in the name of the cause. They always refused. Thom found out later that guy was a Michigan State Police plant.

SDS refused, this guy in the OP didn't

However he came to their attention, it could as easily have drawn the attention of a violent religious group, violent animal rights activists, Gary Busey, violent racial purity group...
Any of them might have spent months giving him the chance to set a bomb. The FBI just gave him one from Acme Industry.

The FBI doesn't have the manpower to entice every possible malcontent into a felony. They had to have a reason to think that he could eventually be talked into this crime.
Like, prostitutes don't spend very long asking me if i want a blowjob. If i don't hesitate at all before saying 'no, thank you,' they move on, trying to find someone to justify their time, miniskirt and waterproof makeup. But if i look down their cleavage before saying 'no,' they'll spend a little time before finally deciding i'm not worth the effort.

I wonder why the usual suspects did not immediately decry this as Islamic terror attempt before the suspect was identified?
