In my thread in the Nontheist Testimonials section of these forums, I mentioned my mythicist leanings, influenced by the likes of Dr. Richard Carrier and Robert M. Price (books from each are still on my to-read list) and was also directed to look at the works of one Earl Doherty. It was a name which was rather unfamiliar to me and based on some brief research I found mixed reviews. At least one of his books have positive reviews from Carrier and Price, but there are questions of his credentials and other details about him: he has no advanced degrees and it is not clear what he is doing now. Some of the criticism I came across pointed to the unscholarly nature of his work and narrow range of sources. Wondering if anyone else is more familiar with his work and can comment on it, or point me to something, either as articles online or videos on YouTube. TIA.

Yes, he's worth it. I don't recall his credentials, but he does know Ancient Greek, at least. His basic thesis is that Paul never regarded Jesus as human, that he existed spiritually in a cosmic mid point between heaven and earth in the prevalent Platonic cosmology of the time.

Doherty posted here for a brief time back in the day. I am familiar with his work because he was around when my interest in mythicism peaked. He's worth the read. I often wondered if he and spin were the same person.

I'm pretty sure that Carrier (who has an extensive library of work on the Secular Web) holds a similar thesis, also knows Greek IIRC, and has a PhD in Ancient History.
