NFL 2017

As a hockey fan, the NHL was always under fire over violence in the sport (even decades ago... fuck I'm getting old), including fighting. Yet baseball brawls were looked to as fanciful and football, well that is football.

Hence the joke, "I went to the fights last night, and a hockey game broke out."

The goons who took over for a couple of decades almost destroyed the sport. Baseball fights are very infrequent, and usually look more like a drunken fire drill than an actual conflict.

It will be interesting to see if the NFL adopts a "targeting" rule next year, and starts ejecting players.

If the NFL wants to control this behavior it merely needs to treat it like it treats off field behavior, something it has not done to this point.

I think in the end it is all about ratings, and people like drama, Elliot's final suspension and Jones's antics being good examples. These things keep people tuning in just as much as savage play on the field. The NFL's handlers know this, that it's all about the show, and that the show has many acts.

Just don't take a knee, because that would be "the inmates running the prison".

Baltimore shits the bed, giving up a TD on 4th and 12 with less than a minute left, and misses the playoffs. Defensive coordinator immediately retires and leaves town, just ahead of the mob with pitchforks and torches. Yes, I was one of them.

Why has Flacco been playing like he's half asleep? Maybe it's just me but he's different these days.

He missed the entire preseason with a back injury, which probably lasted through the first 7-8 games. He also played behind an offensive line missing three starters, and his receivers wouldn’t strike fear into the average college defense.

My condolences to Ravens fans. As a Patriot fan, I'm not exactly saddened that the Ravens aren't in the playoffs, seeing that the Ravens have often been a bunch of fuckers who think they deserve to win against the Patriots and have had the audacity to actually beat them a few times in the playoffs. Assholes! ;)

In my office, we have some transplants, a Ravens fan and a Bills fan, and one idiot likes the Patriots. So I felt bad for one coworker, but happy for another. At least you have a couple Super Bowls. [irony]You should let someone else have a try at it.[/irony] ;)

The big winner in all of this is Andy Dalton's charity:

I live in Bills country (and can be at their stadium in less than 90 minutes), but am not really a fan. Boy, I thought they were going snatch defeat from the jaws of victory again this weekend. Impressive how they messed that up by getting the late interception. At any rate, I don't think they'll go far in the playoffs. Happy for the one local newscaster though, who recently appeared in an ad saying how he just wanted to get to cover a Bills playoff game once in his career.

Cardinals go 8-8 with only 3 of 11 starters on offense making it through the season without going on IR, and one of those 3 got hurt in the final game. Carson Palmer and Bruce Arians retire, so who knows what 2018 is going to be like. Pulling for the Rams the rest of the way, now.

Conference Divisional round up next.

Titans v Patriots - In New England, Titans have a hard time using ESPN story about Belichick, Brady, and Kraft to their advantage and lose.
Steelers v Jaguars - Jaguars rope-a-dope Steelers by looking anemic and powerless against Bills and blow by underprepared Steelers team.

Eagles v Falcons - Falcons are running on all cylinders, having won 4 of their last 6 games. No team has ever been this hot before. They are going to steamroller the Eagles... until the Eagles decide to not submit as quickly as apparently Las Vegas and sports commentators are suggesting they will.
Saints v Vikings - The Vikings have the best defense in the NFL. This is a classic showdown. The Best Defense in the NFL v Minnesota in the Playoffs. Something must budge!

Meanwhile, in the lighter side of things... Johnny Manziel trolled Cleveland going 0-16 for some reason. As if his alcohol/drug/domestic violence/absolutely no work ethic issues had nothing to do with his exit from Cleveland. He collected some nice coin from a franchise he gave roughly a 11% effort to. Meanwhile, he has been offered a contract with the Hamilton TiCats. Personally, I'm hoping he is selected in the expansion draft to play up in Nunavut.

Well, that may be the craziest end to a football game I’ve ever seen. Vikings were toast ... and then they won as time ran out on a freakish play.

Naw, Super Bowl 49 was, but that was pretty darn close! Falcons are out because of a failed catch, Saints out (in part) from a blown tackle.

And the Jaguars are playing in the AFC Championship.

Pats v Jaguars - Well, the Patriots are in their 308th straight AFC Championship. Hard to take any opponent lightly. Jaguars have slogged out a low and high scoring victory in the playoffs. The Patriots just keep on rolling and we know Belichick won't be thinking Super Bowl until after the gun goes off at the end of the AFC Championship game, so they'll be ready.

Eagles v Vikings - Vikings seized victory out of the jaws of defeat that they had just placed their own victory in. Eagles... are a tough team with a good running game. Vikings have a good defense, but this is the playoffs. Neither team is unbeatable.

Incredible finish. The stunned looks was priceless. So many expressions of "WTF just happened ?!"

Was similar to the college championship ending. The only playoffs I've watched was that final quarter. Brees did great to get the lead back. I thought Minn had a decent shot of getting a field goal attempt. The safety made a bad play, but if he did at least tackle him, they would have now been in fg range. Probably doesn't help much though.

That Case Keenum and Nick Foles and Jared Goff are all playoff quarterbacks this year means Jeff Fisher should receive a lifetime ban from the NFL.

I thought Jacksonville could win it all with a decent quarterback, but maybe they will do it without one.

I think that the Jaguars can win this game, but I don't think they have any room for error. If the Jags bring anything less than their best game it can get ugly very fast. We'll have to wait & see.

Romo said the same thing about the Titans.

But the Pats have it. The Jags RB has already been in a car "accident". The Pats have everything covered. ;)

The best Super Bowl matchup would be New England and Minnesota. Had Carson Wentz not gotten hurt, then Philly and New England would've actually pitted the best AFC team against the best NFC team. So Minnesota is the best NFC team now by default.

Anyway, New England should win the AFC, but the Jags have a puncher's chance. They're scrappy enough to play with anyone, especially if they can keep their running game going for most of the game.

Philly and Minnesota... well, the Eagles can play defense and are capable enough against most teams to win with their backup. But if Philly wins, the Super Bowl (assuming the Pats get in) would be like an anaconda against a really tough capybara. The capybara can put up a fight, last awhile, and maybe even draw blood, but the outcome is never in doubt.

Minnesota has a better chance because they've got the QB who got them this far. Also, they can run the ball and they're the #1 D in the NFL, which could spell problems for New England. Keep Brady on the sidelines for long enough and New England's defense will give up points.

Shittiest Super Bowl possibility is Jags v. Eagles. To see Bortles win a Super Bowl would just be fucking weird. To see Nick Foles win it would be a little less dogshit-tastic, unless they gave the game MVP award to Carson Wentz. Which wouldn't make sense, but neither would a Jags v. Eagles Super Bowl.

Oops. Wrong FL. Sowwy.

The AFL is a more free-flowing football variant, mind, at least when the players are not actually brawling.

I feel like this has been a rare playoff season in which (nearly) every game was a good one to watch. Even one or two which started out to be blowouts became interesting as things got later. The lone exception was the NE game, which was rather boring. I also realize that perhaps Pittsburgh (correctly) realized their defense wasn't doing shit, but I still think trying the on-sides kick was a bad idea and definitely sealed their loss.
