White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders violated ethics law when she used her official White House Twitter account to complain about being kicked out of a Virginia restaurant, according to the former head of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics.

Sanders complained on her @PressSec Twitter account Saturday about the Red Hen restaurant that refused to serve her Friday, she tweeted, because “I work for @POTUS.” Restaurant owner Stephanie Wilkinson told The Washington Post that Sanders was told to leave because the business has “certain standards” to uphold, “such as honesty and compassion and cooperation.”

Walter Shaub, who left the Trump administration a year ago after five years as head of the ethics office, posted an annoyed tweet in response to Sanders’ comment, pointing out that it’s a “clear violation” of federal ethics law to name a specific business with the intent of personal gain or retaliation. He compared Sanders’ White House tweet to a federal law enforcement officer who pulls out a badge at a restaurant in a similar situation.

In an interview Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) called upon the Office of Government Ethics to investigate Sanders for using her official Twitter account to attack the restaurant.

While I don't think she should get into trouble because that's just too much bureaucracy, I do think she needs to stop (1) being dishonest because she lied about the reason she was asked to leave and (2) she used her government position in her personal vendetta against the business.

Do you think SHS should get into trouble for this? Do you think she should stop on her own because of the Republican ethic of "personal responsibility" that Republican politicians don't generally have? Personally, I'm with the latter. I guess I am just too tolerant sometimes and give too many chances.

This needs to be addressed because she used her official account. So unless she went to the restaurant as the White House Spokesperson, her use of her work Twitter account to speak on this is wrong, illegal, and there needs to be a record of it so that if this nation is to actually go back to "normal", we remember that work accounts aren't for use for personal matters.

Trump spent a lot of time on the campaign trail threatening vile retribution upon those who crossed the private/professional line. I would expect such an administration to be held to standards no higher than they whined and bloviated on for a year...

Regardless of how she went to the restaurant, the Red Hen owners kicked her out of the restaurant as a White House employee. I do not see what the big deal is.

She broke the law. If this had happened in the Obama administration, Republicans heads would have exploded and Fox news would have had fits until this person was fired.

They kicked her out because she is a mean, dishonest person. They had some staff who were afraid to wait on her.

Did anybody ever kick an Obama administration member out because they worked for Obama? It must have happened somewhere? If so, did they make such a tweet? If so, did it get this level of press?

I find it hard to believe that at the height of No-Bama hysteria somebody somewhere didn't throw an Obama administration member out of a restaurant because they worked for Obama. It must have happened.

As Mumbles has pointed out, Joe Biden wasn't allowed in a diner during the 2012 campaign. Paul Ryan, who is complaining bigly about the Red Hen, invited the diner owner to the Republican convention.

I would say both the owners are assholes. Ryan as well.

Well, aren't you magnanimous.

But then again, that isn't really the subject of this thread.
