Suicidal maniacs who see collateral damage as a valuable way to achieve their goals and have nuclear weapons are something to be very concerned about.
 
Yea, Russia taking Ukraine is no real threat to Europe or the USA neither is Syria.

An unstable Pakistan is a nuclear threat to Europe and the USA.

I would like to think that even people such as the Taliban would know better, alas, I think not. I take them at their word when they say they act as they do because of what they believe. If you can look a little girl in the eye and douse her with acid, or murder your own child as an honor killing, you could push a button in the name of Jihad.

Not clear? In what way is a Ukraine which is historically fractured by ethnic divisions of any importance to our security?

if Russia takes Ukraine, it is of no consequence to us.

if they do and then threaten bordering NATO states like Poland then it is potentially a third destructive Europeanwar. I doubt even Putin would be that stupid.


As we see in Syria and elsewhere long shimmering ethnic tensions are manifesting.


On the other hand Taliban in control ofnuclear weapons is a serious threat to Europe and the USA. India aswell.


My guess would be we have existing military plans to seize and/or disable Pakistani silos.

Yes, which is part of what frustrates me about our never ending war in Af-Pak. Our dozen year quixotic campaign to do <WTF> there, has if anything further destabilized Pakistan. Instead of trying to destabilize Iran, we should have been trying to repair ties there.

Actually I believe it is the Iranian theocrats and Saudi royals that have been trying to destabilize each other for some time. I think the subterfuge predates US involvement.

A few years ago the Saudis sent troops into Dubai to deal with Iranian sedition. At one point before Hussein was toppled Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia were all trying to foul each other up.

When the Saud family carved out modern Saudi Arabia by force they tried to go into Syria and Iran but were not strong enough to deal with the Europeans. The conflicts are today based in long standing ethnic, tribal, and religious grudges.

The USA is really a minor issue in the regional conflicts. Same with Israel, it is an issue but nothing near the primary instigator of regional conflict.

The basic regional historical divide is the Persian theocrats vs the Arab Saudi-UAE royals which the Persians consider illegitimate Muslim regimes. It is the Iranian goal to topple the monarchies and establish a regional Iranian theocratic hegemony.

If the media reports are right, the Saudi royals are scared shitless over Obama's potential reconciliation with Iran.

Actually, I said nothing about SA-Iranian machinations. But, yeah those governments really don’t like each other, and have their own political machinations. The UK and Russia were playing off each other regarding Iran in the 19th century. The west moved in fast to carve up the ME as the Ottoman Empire was collapsing. The UK encouraged the sedition of the Saudi peninsula from the Ottomans. Modern SA as a country wasn’t born until 1932. Russia and the UK occupied Iran during WWII. I’d say western involvement pre-dates SA-Iranian tensions.

Someone has launched very sophisticated software virus’s specifically targeting Iran. Someone with very sophisticated intelligence powers has been assassinating Iranian scientists within Iran. SA and/or the US/Israel is probably funding Jaish al-Adl terrorists that work mostly out of Pakistan attacking Iran. It is hard to say exactly, as spy agencies don’t tend to publish budgets on who they fund. The US is publically hell bent on making sure that the Iranian economy hurts.

I don’t know how one assigns minor/major roles to the game players, as half of the various party efforts are black box. The US has the largest military-complex budgets. The US supplies the most arms. The US supports the most dictators. The US has bombed the most ME/Asian countries, and/or supports the most armies/terrorists. Anyway, my point of US involvement against Iran stands. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other regional games being continually played.

While I do agree it would cause India to pre-empt that doesn't mean the Taliban won't be able to cause the collapse of the Pakistani government.

You're assuming:

1) India pre-empts before the Taliban has a chance to hide the bombs.

2) India manages to hit every bomb.

3) The Taliban don't get their hands on bombs before the end.
