His body gave out years ago, but when he did interviews, you could tell he was all there mentally. In some ways, that's more tragic than frail body + frail mind. He showed up at the TCM movie festival in, I believe, 2012, with a cane, and looking so skeletal that I was convinced he'd die that year. Yet somehow he continued to do movies, including lots of minor things and straight-to-DVD releases, in which he's the only reason to see the thing.
