Fascinating. Cue the usual choruses from the mansplaining condoners....

This week, a study affirming the lasting impact of sexual assault and harassment on middle-aged women’s mental and physical health was published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Its timing is remarkable, published amid an ongoing national conversation and controversy surrounding the Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings — specifically, allegations that he assaulted Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, now 53, when both were in high school.
For their study, researchers surveyed 304 women (all nonsmokers) between the ages of 40 and 60, 19 percent of whom reported a history of workplace sexual harassment, and 22 percent of whom reported a history of sexual assault. (Notably, both figures are significantly lower than national estimates, which hold that 40–75 percent of women have experienced workplace sexual harassment, while 36 percent have experienced sexual assault.)

The study shows that of the roughly 300 women surveyed, those who self report sexual harassment or sexual assault, have worse health than those who don't , as measured by blood pressure and by self reported health issues.

Makes perfect sense. Stress in general will do this to you, and anyone responding this on a questionnaire would certainly be stressed.

You clearly didn't read the linked article.

Remarkable ? I say it's the sign of a miracle !!!

Thanks for 'splaining' to us all that rape is bad bad bad. Really bad. So bad.
We must NEVER forget that
Please keep posting more evidence. Moar threads about sexual abuse and how bad it is.

Deserves a medal IMHO

I do agree about stress but there's also another factor: Abusers tend to seek out targets that they think won't say anything. Does the personality traits they're looking for have anything to do with health?

You either need before and after data, or else only to look at cases where the assailant doesn't care if she says something (ie, stranger rapes, groping in a crowd etc--cases where his identity is concealed.)

Sorry, but what on earth are you and Jolly actually on about?

Tell you what, don't even answer. You probably haven't even bothered your arse to read the article never mind the paper, never mind any number of papers showing that sexual abuse clearly does lifelong damage, including of this sort, to victims.

Carry on quibbling. Make sure only to quibble certain types of things though. ;)

On behalf of anyone anywhere who's been sexually assaulted, especially perhaps as a child or adolescent, including my own mother and younger sister, who in certain ways suffered as a result their entire lives, I find your apparent approach to such things, and that of Jolly, deeply offensive, shameful and quite pathetic.

Sorry, but why are you bringing up stress in general?

Because he's trying to belittle the effects of sexual assault.

How do you twist my words into that? Show your work.

I brought up stress in general because being raped is a traumatically stressful experience and we already know that stress leads to worse health.

We are pointing out problems with the study.

This is not to say that rape isn't bad, just that they haven't proven their position.

Statistical studies do not prove anything, so technically you are correct. I suspect you mean they have not "proven" it to your satisfaction, which is not the same as saying they have not proven their position.

Ok apologies I might have misinterpreted your intentions.

The problem here is we have two obvious confounding factors that do not appear to have been addressed. This is a big problem in the social sciences.

Ah, well, it appears there's no 'we' now that Jolly has clarified.

This is not to say that rape isn't bad, just that they haven't proven their position..

Yeah that must be the problem here Loren. Because, there's like, room here for reasonable doubt that rape is bad and has longlasting adverse effects, isn't there?

Tell you what, I'm going to cut you some slack here. It's Friday. I'm in a generous mood. I'm going to assume you're just someone who doesn't think properly and can't help themselves from saying stupid things, and not that you're merely disgusting.

You claim they are confounding, but you have offered no evidence that these "factors" are relevant, especially the one about health, personality traits and abuser targeting.
This is a big problem in the social sciences.
It can be. A bigger problem is people who do not understand what statistical studies actually can and cannot show. It is usually not possible to address even single quibble or possible consideration in a statistical study in the social sciences.

This study suggests (with some compelling evidence) that there long-lasting physical effects of rape.
