I know this is primarily a US board, but I know I'm not the only Canadian here. What do my fellow Canadians here think of the Federal election that has now been called?
Will Trudeau hang onto power or will he be displaced by the conservatives. Will the NDP or the Greens play any significant role? Who are you voting for?
I voted Green last time, because I was fine with either Harper still around or Trudeau in office, and the Greens lined up best with my policy preferences. This time I'm not sure.
Trudeau's had some scandals since he came into power, which have hurt his numbers in polls, but little has changed from a street's eye view. We've got marijuana legalized (I support), which I don't think would have happened had the Conservatives stayed in power. But what else would have been different? Trudeau's picking his cabinet by identity politics was disgusting, and his "we like to say people kind" line was embarrassing, and the nepotism that got him his name recognition and won him the election was distasteful, but he's no Trump. And he's no Mulrooney or Doug Ford. He's not a really threat to the country nor much that I hold dear. Scheer is a bit of an unknown entity. He's religious, but has said he won't re-open key issues like abortion etc, and that they are settled law. But I've always been ideologically opposed to and suspicious of the conservatives. The NDP and Greens look to be spoilers at this point. I don't think either of them can win the Federal election, but if I can't decide between Trudeau and Scheer, I may vote for one of them. They both look better to me than both Scheer and Trudeau. My riding is likely to go Liberal no matter what I vote. Maybe I'll just stay home.
The election is in late October, 2019 btw. Its just next month. Quite a contrast to the US campainging seasons. And so much less politically charged. Scheer wouldn't be the end of the world. Neither would more Trudeau. *shrug* Maybe the debate will help me decide if I care to vote for either of them against the other. Maybe somebody here will.
