Removing Confederate Monuments and Renaming Confederate-Named Military Bases

Gotta say, naming forts after traitors who killed a lot of Americans always seemed a little weird. Maybe the Air Force can name airfields after 9/11 hijackers.

Or naval bases after the six Japanese aircraft carriers involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor: Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, Hiryū, Shōkaku, and Zuikaku.

There's no way to prove which name or statue is good or bad for society. So ----

The simple solution to all this is:

Have all the names, and all the statues (or crosses, nativity scenes, etc.) be paid for by anyone who wants them. Let anyone buy the naming rights to anything, to military bases, to streets, to stadiums, to public parks, etc., no matter what. If there's competing groups wanting to name the same thing, let them bid on it -- the highest bidder is given the right to name it.

Let anyone erect a statue in a public place by leasing or renting the space, in a process allowing all parties to have any space available, pay the price, put there whatever symbol or display they want.

And there could even be a process to oppose a certain display or name by having those opposed to it offer a higher price to exclude it, if they can raise more money than the party favoring it. So any very obnoxious display or name could be prevented by a large-enough group raising money to oppose it and paying to have the name or statue excluded.

So those who care the most could control what is put on public display or what names are adopted. They would pay the price to get what they want, and everyone is benefited by the extra revenue to the public treasury to pay for infrastructure and other public needs. A win-win for everyone.

It is so silly and idiotic to be arguing over this, when a market system would settle it so easily.

Have you ever seen the film "The Lives of Others"?

It's a very good movie about the Stasi in the former East Germany and the spying they did on potential "dissidents" like authors, actors, and artists. The lead actor was actually one of them...though he plays a Stasi intelligence officer in the film.

One of the most fascinating facts that I learned from the added features on the DVD was that the production had a difficult time finding actual locations for filming in the former East Germany and the same thing was true with the period-correct surveillance equipment.

Though it was filmed just over 15 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the real buildings they wanted to film in had been torn down. The former East Germany had done such a thorough job of erasing their own recent history that it presented a problem for the filmmakers.

Fifteen years. Yet here we are in America seemingly unable to let go of an even more brief moment in our history from 150 years ago.

Well, Trump loves the internet, ask the internet for new names.

Fort Tanky McTankface, Fort Air-boner, Fort Signyer Lifeway...

Fort Bonespurs Babywall.

As Trump loses his generals, he clings to the legacy of Confederate failure - CNNPolitics
It's head-scratching, really, that the most prominent Army base in America is named for Braxton Bragg.
He was on the wrong side of history, as a Confederate general and a slave owner.

...
As it turns out, Bragg wasn't even that good at his job.

...
But on Wednesday, President Donald Trump quashed the idea, saying they are "part of a Great American Heritage, and a history of Winning, Victory and Freedom."
"The United States of America trained and deployed our HEROES on these Hallowed Grounds, and won two World Wars. Therefore, my Administration will not even consider the renaming of these Magnificent and Fabled Military Installations... ...Our history as the Greatest Nation in the World will not be tampered with. Respect our Military!!"
Then let's rename Pearl Harbor Naval Base the Isoroku Yamamoto Naval Base, after the commander of Japan's attack on that base.

These Are the 10 U.S. Army Installations Named for Confederates - The New York Times
Scattered across the American South, 10 Army bases bear the names of Confederate officers, including several who resigned their commissions in the United States military and fought against the Union Army in some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

Some of the military installations acknowledge their namesakes on their websites. Others, like Fort Hood in Texas, make no mention on their websites of the Confederate officers whose legacies they honor.
  • Camp Beauregard, Louisiana -- Brig. Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard
  • Fort Bragg, North Carolina -- Gen. Braxton Bragg
  • Fort Polk, Louisiana -- Lt. Gen. Leonidas Polk
  • Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia -- Lt. Gen. Ambrose Powell Hill
  • Fort Pickett, Virginia -- Maj. Gen. George E. Pickett
  • Fort Hood, Texas -- Maj. Gen. John Hood
  • Fort Lee, Virginia -- Gen. Robert E. Lee
  • Fort Rucker, Alabama -- Col. Edmund W. Rucker
  • Fort Gordon, Georgia -- Lt. Gen. John Brown Gordon
  • Fort Benning, Georgia -- Gen. Henry Lewis Benning

So, the USS Robert E. Lee has been decommissioned. Most of the ships named after confederates have been. Not a problem. But there are, if i recall correctly, streets on the sub bases named after some of the subs that were named after those men..... Would this cover those?
Lee, Jackson, Hunley...
More to the point, do thry need Congress (and thus Bonespurs) to become involved? Or does the authority for street names, like BLM Plaza, rest somewhere below the same desk as the nuclear command authority?

They need to roll up their sleeves and start working back through history, trash the busts of Roman Emperors, Nero, Galba....Greek statues, Pericles, Xenophon, Alexander...not politically correct, all goes into the trash cans or landfill.

What is your opinion on Churchill statues?

How about you submit your opinion on this before asking for opinions on unrelated things?

View attachment 28181

So, you are saying I shouldn't ask for your opinion because what I will find inside that box is racist?

Is that what you are trying to communicate?

Come on. Give a real answer!

What is your opinion on the actual subject at hand, people removing racist statues following decades of inaction?

Or, into a museum of evil, so that we can view them with the proper context. Pigeon shit is not enough, especially since they clean them. All it takes is to take a lidar scan for posterity and place them in a more appropriate context for honoring bastards... Like coating them in epoxoy, then placing them in a Plexiglass box under a toilet.
