Stacey Abrams finally broke the code to provide Democrat victories in Georgia in the US Senate and US Presidency. Georgia GOP is working hard to ensure access to absentee voting is so restricted, that the GOP will never lose again.

The question to ask though, is despite the GOP's efforts, can Abrams manage a non-pandemic victory. Let's be honest, voting by mail (which the GOP is trying to gravely restrict) eases the process. It doesn't require waiting in line for hours to vote! Yes, people should vote even if it means waiting in line, but the reality is, waiting long in lines will deter people from voting, and long voting lines in cities is endemic and cliche and unforgivable.

Access to absentee ballots provided city voters an opportunity to vote without having to endure ridiculous delays on voting day.

This will, hopefully, not be needed in 2022 or 2024 as the pandemic hopefully is done with. But still, the increase in turnout through absentee voting proves that there are more people willing to vote if certain restrictions don't exist, for whatever reason. Early voting could help with this as well, but again, the insistence to centralize voting to a single location in a large county is a roadblock to help again restrict access for people with limited means of mobility.

So 2020 was an impressive upset and the culmination of a ridiculous amount of hard work by Abrams et al... but the question remains, is it possible to do it again without absentee ballots?

It will be very difficult. Mail in ballots are likely key to increasing minority voters, such as the black voters in the Atlanta metro area that gave Biden the victory. Black voters are forced to wait longer to vote due to fewer per capita voting places in their neighborhoods. People waited over 5 hours during the Primaries and lines will get longer b/c Georgia has been eliminating rather than increasing polling places at the same time that voter registration rates have increased and GA population is skyrocketing (up 35% in past 20 years).

True. Blacks and Hispanics (who are key to a Democrat victory), especially in inner cities and rural areas, don't know how to use the internet to find out where their polling place is. Fortunately, they do know how to lick a stamp and stick the ballot in their mailbox. Well, at least according to Joe Biden.

Poor people tend to live where polling places are fewer and far between which makes it more difficult to get to the polls. Moreover, there is clear evidence that in many states, poll closures are predominantly in areas of poverty which also tend to have a higher concentration of minority residents. Mail in votes make it easier for the poor and the aged to vote. Restricting mail in voting is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters.

The idea that blacks or other minorities tend to be ignorant on how to use the internet to find polling places is unbelievably idiotic.

And racist as fuck. Not to mention the fact that with the way most poor people find themselves employed, there's just no way they can get 5 free hours in the middle of the week, regardless. Letting someone vote at their leisure is a common courtesy we should have been enjoying for the last couple hundred years.

Does GA have a voting commission or similar body? Even if it's not politically independent (which it should be), they could be sued (over and over if necessary) to at least have equal representation (polling places/population) in every neighborhood in the state.

Wow. You win a free hooded white robe for the most disgustingly racist post of the day. It's not about knowing where the polling place is, but about having the kind of job where you can get off work without penalty to go stand in line for hours b/c there are fewer polling stations and longer lines in minority neighborhoods.

An extensive phone location data study of 10 million people at 93,000 polling locations showed that people voting in majority black neighborhoods in 2016 spent significantly longer waiting in line to vote than people in majority white neighborhoods.

GA elections are controlled by the Office of the Secretary of State, a Republican who ran a platform of strict Voter ID laws. In 2013, the Republican controlled SCOTUS struck down a critical part of the 1965 Voters Rights Act that required states with a documented history of racist disenfranchisement to get Fed approval for changes to the voting procedures. Since then, GA and most Republican controlled states have eliminating polling stations in minority neighborhoods and doing everything they can get away with the impede likely Dem voters.

Thanks! When do I get my robe? Its been a little chilly at night lately. You might want to give the robe to President Joe Biden instead, though, as I was merely mocking his (as you said), "disgustingly racist" comment from his recent town hall, where he said Blacks and Hispanics can't easily find where to get their vaccine, since they're not very good with the internet. I was merely riffing on his comment and applying it to finding the polling place instead of the vaccination line. Have a look see!

I must be pretty stupid because I know where to find my polling place on the internet but I have no idea where I would look for covid 19 vaccination sites that have the vaccine. And I am white.

But why would anyone think that "riffing" on an incredibly idiotic or racist comment somehow absolved themselves of making an incredibly idiotic or racist statement?

Not being able to find your vaccination site (or polling place) via the internet is a human problem, not a Black or White problem. Which is why Biden's statement was ridiculous. Blacks and Hispanics having trouble using the internet is a running theme among liberals going back years. I sort of that it was finally dead and buried myself, so was surprised to see Biden still bring up that racist cannard in 2021.

So let me get this straight. Making fun of, and mocking someone who made a racist statement makes you a racist? A lot of late night talk show hosts and comedians, not to mention the general public, would disagree with you on that, but whatever.

Really, this running theme among liberals going back years is news to me, and am I routinely accused of being a liberal on this board.

You think choosing to "mock" someone by riffing on an incredibly idiotic or racist comment to make another incredibly idiotic or racist comment absolves the mocker of any responsibility. Given the myriad of ways to mock someone without sounding incredibly idiotic or racist, I find your rationale truly revealing.

And for some reason you incorrectly think "But why would anyone think that "riffing" on an incredibly idiotic or racist comment somehow absolved themselves of making an incredibly idiotic or racist statement? is an allegation that the mocker is a racist. I did not make such an accusation nor did that thought cross my mind when I wrote it. But, to tell the truth, IMO, your responses are not helping you here in that regard.

Stacey is trying to stop this insane attempt to suppress the vote. Oddly enough, in the past, it was primarily Republicans who voted by mail, and I do know a few Black Democrats who voted in person because they personally didn't trust the mail in ballots, so it's not only Republicans that seem to distrust absentee ballots.

One of the most obvious attempts to suppress the Black vote is the attempt to eliminate Sunday early voting, which is known as "souls to the polls". For years, Black churches have organized their members to go together on Sunday to vote. We only have one Sunday for early voting. It's very obvious that Republicans want to make it harder for Democrats to vote, and they know that the vast majority of Black citizens vote for Democrats. And, Georgia isn't the only state that is attempting to make voting more difficult.

For years, I was very pleased with all of the options that we have in Georgia. We have 3 full weeks of early voting, and since 2005, anyone could vote by mail. People can also register to vote when they obtain or renew their driver's licenses, which is one of the things that Republicans want to end. It's not that difficult to register to vote in Ga, but this is such an obvious attempt to make it less convenient.

The article says that they are backing off on requiring an excuse to absentee vote, but they are requiring a copy of one's ID to get an absentee ballot. That is an obvious attempt to make it difficult for poor to absentee vote, since many in that group don't have a printer in their homes. Why not just require that one put their driver's license number on the application? No, we can't do that. That would make it too easy for the more disenfranchised to vote absentee.

Stacey Abrams says new federal protections for voting rights are needed because too many states, including Georgia, are trying to hinder access.

Legislation proposed this year by Republicans in the Georgia’s General Assembly would eliminate or limit automatic voter registration, early in-person voting and mail-in voting, Abrams said. These changes are unnecessary and amount to voter suppression, she told the U.S. House Administration Committee on Thursday, urging members to move forward with a bill that could prevent those changes from becoming law.

“Federal legislation and federal courts have been long necessary to permit actual access to voting for millions of Americans who happen to live in states where we do not have those who believe our voices should be heard,” Abrams told the committee.

The For the People Act is a wide-ranging voting, elections and campaign finance bill that Democrats say would strengthen American democracy and eliminate racial inequities. In addition to mandating early voting and automatic voter registration, it also would restore voting rights to people convicted of felonies, create independent redistricting commissions in every state and close dark money loopholes in federal law.

The measure is such a top priority in the Democratic-controlled U.S. House and Senate that leaders in each chamber assigned it the first available bill number, H.R. 1 and S. 1. The House could vote on the measure as early as next week, but it has a more uncertain future in the Senate where Republicans might use the filibuster to thwart action.

It does seem like it's time for the filibuster to die.
