Chuck Schumer let the cat out of the bag on Monday, but only Democrats found his remarks surprising in the least. Schumer, a member of the Senate Democratic caucus leadership that will have to transition to the minority in January, tried to acknowledge the verdict delivered by voters three weeks earlier.

In a defense of big-government solutions, Schumer allowed that Democrats let their enthusiasm for nanny-state policies get the best of them in 2009, after winning the presidential election, the House, and a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

“Democrats blew the opportunity the American people gave them,” declared the senior Senator from New York. At the time, the middle class had just experienced the economic shock of their lives, and the election was a mandate to change direction from Bush-era economic policies, Schumer told the National Press Club. “We took their mandate,” Schumer explained, “and put all focus on the wrong problem – healthcare reform.”

He doesn't denounce ACA efforts beyond the fact that they weren't infrastructure refurbishment. Quite a difference form your take I believe.

So Obamacare is actually liked, but, real working 'mericans would rather have shovel ready jobs than assured health care right now.

You mean he "ONLY" said that it was the wrong policy and the wrong time?

Many people can afford health insurance that couldn't before.

We are done with worries over pre-existing conditions. Parents can keep their children covered longer.

How this is anything but a success is beyond me.

We should have had universal coverage a long time ago. We should have the best health insurance system in the world.

But this in no way makes efforts to improve our third rate, Wall Street run, for-profit insurance system, a negative.

When somebody bad mouths Obamacare you can bet they have absolutely nothing of any substance to offer in it's place.

It is mindless politics, nothing more.

Where do you get the idea that Obamacare is liked? It was unpopular the day it was passed, and Democrats just got crushed in the last election. If so liked, why didn't Democrats at least win re-election in purple states like Colorado and North Carolina? And why didn't Democratic Senate candidates want Obama to campaign for them?

Actually, I said at the time that Obama was making a big mistake with pushing Obamacare at that time, and that was even before I knew how bad it would actually turn out to be.

It sounds to me like Schumer is preparing the way to deal with Republicans on Obamacare reform.

Success? It raised premiums sky high. It forces employers to carry it for their employees at a time when they are strapped for sales. It exempts part-time workers which means jobs are growing for 29 hour weeks while full time jobs are being lost. It is a bureaucratic monstrosity.

Meanwhile, people who couldn't get affordable care can do so, but only because of subsidies. Obamacare does nothing to reduce actual health care costs. In fact, it raises them. We could have passed the subsidies without Obamacare and not have to deal with all the problems that Obamacare creates.

Premiums have been sky rocketing for years, but suddenly it is the fault of Obamacare? Utter nonsense!!!

The problem is for-profit health insurance. A system where we get less and less for more and more money every year. A failed system in other words.

That is what needs to be eliminated, not Obamacare. To focus on Obamacare when the real problem is for-profit corporate run health insurance is to focus on the band-aid trying to cover a gaping wound.

How would you propose to get rid of for-profit health care without getting rid of Obamacare? Obamacare guarantees health insurance companies a profit even if they don't get enough sign-ups to cover their bottom line.

US health insurance is more costly than other countries because of health insurance regulations so Obama has chosen to try to solve that problem through MORE regulation. It makes no sense whatsoever unless you are a for-profit health insurance company in the US.

How would you propose to get rid of for-profit health care without getting rid of Obamacare?

As I said, Obamacare is a band-aid on the gaping rotting wound called for-profit health insurance.

Clean up the wound and stop the infection, move to a universal non-profit system, and of course Obamacare goes away also.

Then you DO want to get rid of Obamacare. How about this. Abolish Obamacare but keep the subsidies for high-risk and low income recipients. I think that's what the next Congress will likely do. Democrats will say we fixed Obamacare. Republicans will say we got rid of it.
