The Peruvian government is planning to file criminal charges against Greenpeace activists who may have permanently scarred the Nazca Lines World Heritage Site during a publicity stunt.

It's stupid to walk around irreplaceable sites and possibly damage them.

It is worse to alter the climate to the point where major catastrophes are already taking place.

Well then, I'm glad this gesture caused that to stop.

Is there any gesture that would get it to stop?

Those profiting from pollution want it to continue.

Their greed exceeds their caring about the lives of their grandchildren.

In capitalist terms this was a great success.

Greenpeace is getting their message out, for free.

Sure they absorb a little blowback, the cost of doing business, but the message is out there for people who care about their grandchildren to see.

Was that the message they were trying to get across? A tu quoque writ large? Well, it's still stupid if so.

You seem to think survival of the planet is some debate.

The fate of every human is at stake.

Waving your hands around because some people walked near a historic site is absurd.

It was a stupid thing to do.

But to focus on it and not the motivation behind it is childish and dangerous.

Another big WTF??? moment for me...two on one thread!

unter...my position on the state of the environment and what we should do about it is not in question here. Greenpeace's stunt was damaging to any message they were trying to get across, as well as being potentially damaging to the Nazca site. Hence, doubly stupid on their part. Hence, my "WTF were they thinking?"

There is no fucking defense for what they did. Your tu quoque attempt at a defense included...and your attempt to defend your tu quoque defense here is completely misdirected.

Who gives a damn how befuddled you can become?

The fate of the planet is on the line. We are losing species at an alarming rate. The latest droughts in Australia and Brazil were caused by man-made climate change.

I'm befuddled why you think there is something more important than this to discuss?

And it is pertinent to this thread because it is inherent in the idea of living a renewable life.

BTW, unter, has it occurred to you that one could be both concerned about the state of the planet (and thus sympathetic to at least some of Greenpeace's position) and disgusted and angry about their tactics? I'm both angry that they'd risk damaging the Nazca site to pull this stunt and that they pull such counterproductive, stupid, irresponsible stunts which undermine the environmentalist position.

That's not what this fucking thread is about. This thread is about some fucking irresponsible idiots that pulled a fucking stupid stunt and potentially damaged a fragile historical monument. And in so doing undermined the very message they were trying to get across. Greenpeace should get behind bringing criminal charges against them!

There is no fucking defense for it, unter.

What can be said of the tactic is that it is counter-productive and therefore stupid.

Greenpeace has apologized. Hopefully it can understand it's hypocrisy.

But I still think the message is the most pertinent part of the story and those who support the message should not let those who want to condemn Greenpeace on the message as much as the tactic control the conversation.

Aah, tu quoque and strawman...a double whammy...

I'm not laying out a defense for the tactic. It was a very bad tactic and should be condemned.

But I can focus on more than the tactic.

I can walk and chew gum.

I can look at the message too, and focus on that if I choose. Which is not a defense of the tactic.

A strawman?

So there are not those who want to condemn the message?

Your naivety is not my fallacy.
