Jussie Smollet - Horrible Hate Crime or Horrible Case of TDS?

So how much time do yall think Juicy omelet should get? I don't think he'll get off without any jail time. This is regardless of no one actually getting hurt. Why I think he'll be going behind bars is that he took the stand and lied again. :ROFLMAO:
He could get up to 3 years, but I think if I was the judge, I'd give him between 6 months and 1 year. Which should be enough to make the jail time sting for a bit, and give him opportunity to think about his big, dumb plan. Plus, pay full restitution to the city of Chicago for the money they wasted investigating this. Finally, he should be required to stay 500 ft away from any store selling bleach, rope and red hats. And Subway should ban him for life!
Looks like I was pretty close to the judge's decision, though the judge gave him 5 months, instead of 6 and gave him probation and an additional fine of $25,000. The judge sure gave him a good, well deserved scolding:

The dude is in need of some serious therapy. His behavior in the courtroom about "not being suicidal" seems a bit unhinged. What point was he trying to make by repeating that? That he expects to die in jail at the hands of some "secret cabal", and is afraid the coroner will label it a suicide to cover it up? Like the Jeffrey Epstein death conspiracy? Or maybe he does plan to commit suicide in prison, and is saying he's not suicidal now to create some new conspiracy or doubt about his death and become a martyr for social justice?

I think he has been lying to himself for over a year at this point, which is leading to some serious delusions. Also, the mindset that led to his outrageous plot to start with implies he isn't exactly level headed.

I would hope that part of his probation involves assisting people that are actually victims of hate crimes.

So many emotions at the same time over his family's comments. Infuriating that they'd invoke allies in the fight against inequality towards Blacks and LGBT, embarrassment that folks who already give us a hard time will use this to minimize & criticize the movement, the hilarity of it all because it's so damn obvious he's guilty, and sadness because some people actually believe he's being unjustly treated by the system.
Its a bit odd that his family has stood by him so firmly through the whole investigation. I'm all for family loyalty and such, but there comes a point when the evidence is so overwhelming that any sane person would start to wonder if maybe you really don't know your brother like you think you do, or maybe he's slowly becoming mentally ill, or deep down he's just some sort of sociopath. I watch true crime shows on TV, and I wish I had a nickel for every time a mother, brother, neighbor, friend, etc said something like, "He was just the nicest guy you could imagine. He'd give you the shirt off his back. He was active in his church. I would never imagine he would rape and kill seven teen girls."

It's likely why he chose a career in acting. It fed his addiction to playing pretend & just like any out-of-control drug addiction it eventually kills you (or in his case, only drove him nuts(I hope)).

I haven't really invested a lot of time in reading about this issue. I see it as a one-off weird guy. However, it's interesting to me now because last night I was flipping through the channels. On CNN, they were taking a long time to discuss Ukraine. I often flip to conservative channels to find out how they cover things differently and I was expecting to see on Fox something about how everything in Ukraine was Biden's fault, which is typical coverage. Instead, Hannity was talking about this topic, Smollet. With all the race issues, Blue Lives Matter, critical race theory, etc etc promoted by conservatives, somewhere in there is Smollet, but it sort of alludes me as to exactly where it fits into conservative narratives and why they are so fixated on prioritizing this topic. Can someone explain this?

At this point, I wouldn't be shocked if the next big news about this guy is that he's actually not gay.

Not really. Over the past few years they have been fed a constant diet of how "systemic racism" etc. is the cause of all and every one of their problems.

I don't see this as odd at all.
My conservative irish Catholic mom would have.
She'd have brought her sharp tongue to a courtroom. Really, she could be a force!

You seriously can't see why they would fixate on a case of a black man falsely crying racism??? [removed]

Personally, I put Smollett's bad behavior to his white Jewish side.

Well, that's a good point and I can see one person screaming how this disproves the idea of systemic racism, but other conservatives seem all over the place flailing.

The right did the same with the Bubba Wallace noose story, and still do it even after he's been cleared.

but other conservatives seem all over the place flailing.

I thought that was their default condition. It's what you get when you factory reset a Republican. A Democrate's default state is trying to hug everyone they come into contact with.

From December.

This case is similar to the Arbery murder, where prosecutors initially corruptly declined charges, but another office eventually effected prosecutions.

Actor Jussie Smollett sentenced to probation, jail time for staging fake hate crime

Actor Jussie Smollett, one-time cast member of the TV drama Empire, was sentenced in a Chicago court to 30 months' probation and 150 days in jail for staging a hate crime against himself.

Key points:

  • Jussie Smollett claimed he was the victim of a hate crime in 2019
  • Police said Smollett paid two people $US3,500 each to stage the attack
  • Smollett will serve 30 months probation and 150 days in jail

Smollett, 39, was also ordered to pay $US120,000 ($163,000) in restitution and fined $US25,000 by Cook County Circuit Court Judge James Linn.

Smollett was found guilty by a jury in December of five of the six felony disorderly conduct counts he faced, one for each time he was accused of lying to police.

Prosecutors said Smollett, who is Black and gay, lied to police when he told them he was accosted on a dark Chicago street by two masked strangers in January 2019.

Smollett claimed the attackers threw a noose around his neck and poured chemicals on him while yelling racist and homophobic slurs and expressions of support for former US president Donald Trump.

Police arrested the actor a month later, saying he paid two brothers $US3,500 to stage the attack in an effort to raise his show-business profile.

He eventually pleaded not guilty to six counts of felony disorderly conduct.

His case took an unexpected turn in spring 2019 when the Cook County state's attorney's office dropped a 16-count indictment against him in exchange for Smollett forfeiting his $US10,000 bond without admitting wrongdoing.

The dismissal drew criticism from then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago's police superintendent, who called the reversal a miscarriage of justice.

In 2019, a special prosecutor assigned to the case recommended charging Smollett again and a grand jury returned an indictment.

Smollett's acting career declined after the incident. He lost his role as a singer-songwriter in the final season of Empire, hip-hop drama that ended a five-year run in 2020.

The is another false police report case with a racial angle in the news.

I remember when she was found on the highway after her supposed kidnapping, but don't remember hearing about the initial disappearance. Things started sounding real suspicious early on. I figured it was a hoax in only a matter of days. I'm kinda shocked to hear they are only now charging her with the hoax. Its been 5 years! Did they have Barney Fife working on this case?

I do wonder if they can charge her with a hate crime, even though there was no hate directed at a specific person. The article indicates that some Hispanics were pretty upset with being stereotyped.

Yeah, I guess we can expect good ole Mom to stand up for their wayward kids. If it was one of my brothers (improbable as it would be), and I saw all the evidence, I would push them to own up to it and take their punishment. If they continued to double down on their tall tale, I'd probably not forgive and then say sayanora.
