When philosophy leads astray

Philosophy and science and inextricably bound together, as I have shown many times. As noted several times, Einstein said he would never have arrived at relativity theory except for his debt to philosophy. And he arrived at it before he did any maths or there were any experimental tests.

I fully agree with you about the significance and educational value of methodology as well as history and philosophy of science. So many people today—and even professional scientists—seem to me like somebody who has seen thousands of trees but has never seen a forest. A knowledge of the historic and philosophical background gives that kind of independence from prejudices of his generation from which most scientists are suffering. This independence created by philosophical insight is—in my opinion—the mark of distinction between a mere artisan or specialist and a real seeker after truth.

— Albert Einstein

That said, in my opinion, Einstein’s philosophy led him astray in both rejecting quantum indeterminism and in being a hard determinist. But that’s philosophy, and philosophical disagreements are inevitable just as philosophy itself is inevitable and the very stuff of life, along with all forms of art. Life and knowledge cannot be reduced to a lab experiment.

Good morning, are you awake now?

A Pavlovian conditioned response?

Look at all the posts on free will and determinism over the last few years. Is that all there is to philosophy?

I am not well read in philosophy but I did thumb through Hegel. Philosophy[ is more tan debate and logic, there is a goal and and it leads somewhere.

It is are than the accumulation of facts and debating facts.

Hegel to me represents the classical metaphysical approach to rereality.

Superseded by modern experimental science. There is no mind-body duality.

So, what constitutes philosophy in specifics? How is it applied in life? Where should it lead you?

Or is philosophy just an intellectual pass time or game?
