When I was a college-age kid I had an older cousin, an Existentialist, who mentored me. "Existence precedes essence," he would say repeatedly in response to my musings. At the time I wasn't sure what that meant. These days I understand it as an answer to Plato and much of philosophy since Plato.

Didn't Jesus rent his cloak when he got angry, or maybe in mourning, or maybe I am thinking of some other biblical figure? I know the veil of the temple was rent, but I don't think anyone was wearing it.

I can’t recommend John McFee’s Basin and Range highly enough. I read it years ago, but have just ordered it on Kindle to re-read (this topic made me think of it). I now see that “Basin” is the first of a four-part series...
