Plenty of people on both sides of the political aisle have described the stakes of the upcoming presidential election in biblical terms. But at least one person in a San Diego Catholic church took things a step further in recent weeks. In an insert to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church’s weekly bulletin on Oct. 16, a flier told parishioners that “it is a mortal sin to vote Democrat,” according to NBC 7. In the Catholic Church, a mortal sin is one that would condemn a soul to hell unless the person confesses and repents. The flier reminded readers of this fact in graphic terms, telling them they are at risk of “descending into Hell” and “eternal damnation,” if they support Democratic nominees

Isn't Christianity supposed to be pro-social? Aren't Christians supposed to love their neighbors as themselves, give to the poor and eschew accumulation of wealth?
It seems to me a perusal of Christ's life and teachings paints a picture of Hippie, not Republican values.

Republicans, it seems to me (and to social psychologists and neurologists) are more tribal than Democrats, more hard hearted toward out-groups, and less concerned with 'the other' and those they perceive as undeserving.

Republicans, and conservatives in general, seek to preserve convention and the status quo. Democrats are the idealists, it's they who are comfortable with novelty and the unfamiliar. It's they who score high on Haidt's Care/Harm moral foundation. It's they Republicans deride as 'bleeding hearts'.

Which political orientation seems more Christlike? Who would the good parishioners of the Immaculate Conception Church have chosen if they had been amongst those whom Pilate offered the choice between Jesus and Barabas?

To anyone not accustomed to the oddity of American thinking, the Republicans are obviously violently anti-Christian, and even the fundamentalist propaganda reveals a total lack of interest n the New Testament other than Revelations, 'the ravings of a drug addict' according to Shaw.
