He seems to be a lot better now. Honestly, the dismissal of the Late Show is extremely premature and there's no indication that Colbert is going to fail.

I still haven't watched the show, but I saw a couple of clips on YouTube. I thought he did well. His smarmy TV newsman character transfers to smarmy talk show host easily.
I read some time ago that he learned at Second City to "wear" a character lightly "like a cap". So maybe both characters are not that far from the real guy.
