A Word from Wendell Pierce

When a cop pulls his or her gun a camera should start on their person to record the reason for pulling it.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to AthenaAwakened again.

It should be recording anytime they're standing up out of the car.
They should not be able to defeat it in any way. They do serve to reduce complaints as the study shows: http://www.policefoundation.org/content/body-worn-camera
Not every cop has a car.

But for somebody to closely examine every time a cop gets out of their car is not practical.

But it would be easy to closely look at every time a cop pulls their gun. These are rare events, at least according to the police.

By the time they've pulled their gun, it is too late. Moreover, there will be people insisting that it was whatever happened before the video starts that justified the police action.

I think there needs to be dash cams and the video recorders on each police officer, and they are required to be recording any time there is any interaction with anyone in the public. This protects the police as much as it protects the public.

But what a fucked up world where we are even having a discussion about protecting the public from the police :(

No, because the camera won't get the reason unless it's equipped with a time machine.

Cops should simply have cameras running all the time they are on duty.

Who said anything about examining? You record the video all the time, you only look at it if there's an issue.

It's the same as the dashcam I have in my car--if the engine is on the camera comes on. Unless something happens the old video just gets overwritten.

That's a reasonable objection.

You could have a "constant recording" thing, with tags when something critical happens like "gun unholstered".
Then, you know that you have to review the recording, can start a few minutes before, and still have the rest of the week recorded in case some complaint not linked to an unholstered gun is made.

The problem is with the confidentiality. You don't want private conversations or even racist/sexist jokes (even if they shouldn't be making them) to end on youtube. You need a secure archive for the recordings and a trustworthy panel to review them.
Given the low level of professionalism your cops sometime display, I can understand them beingt wary of the professionalism of that panel. But, ultimately, it's the way of the future. Once accepted, it could even be used for prevention, like in aviation where we try to identify trends of incidents to mitigate the risk before an accident happens.

Your reference to the cockpit voice recorders and "black boxes" bring up an excellent precedent for having the body cameras and dash cams on the police.

You can't hack into something like a gopro, but it uses a card that could be taken out and 'lost'. And theoretically any camera that is using a card could be 'lost'.

I don't think it's an issue--review if there's a complaint made, otherwise it just gets recycled in time.

Much worse is the private situations cops sometimes end up in. You need a good system against leaks.
