Another Assualt on Free Speech...Now On Public Employee Eric Walsh

Unless there have been complaints from real people, I don't feel comfortable with this.

This could just as easily be a minister in the United Church Of Christ saying radical things that many people find upsetting (think Jeremiah Wright). Had Wright worked outside of the church, i would not want him to have to censer himself for fear of being investigated by his employer.

Working for the govt should not mean you can't speak as a citizen.
I'm sorry, but exposing that accepting that evolution has a scientific backing is being Satanic to large groups of people (as a leader) should keep you from being in any field that has to do with Biology in pretty much any setting. Why not make Jenny McCarthy his replacement while we are at it?

has this man DONE anything that hurt, harmed, or hindered anyone? Has he used his office in govt to shut down the teaching of evolution in schools?

So far he has preached stupid shit from the pulpit.

Once he does something, I will gladly put on my Sherlock Holmes hat and grab my magnifying glass and investigate the hell out of the this man. But as long as he does do harm using the power of his office to do it, I can't in good conscience support fishing expeditions. Yeah, you might catch a whale, but more than likely you'll just drown a lot of innocent worms.

Sometimes people get away with shit because nobody is paying close enough attention. I think this case at least warrants an investigation to make sure there isn't a pattern in his performance. This is hypothetical, but if it was found out that he opposed building free clinics in areas with high percentages of Muslims or LGBT people, that might be something that wouldn't be noticed at the time but would make sense in light of this new information.

Conservatives sometimes say they wish the government were run like a business. If this guy worked for a company with shareholders who cared about public image, his ass would be fired in a heartbeat. Obviously, the government is non-profit, but the city council plausibly has some stake in their reputation as an office that serves its constituents.

we discuss hypothetical all day, but should that be benchmark for very real action. Should it be enough that I can think of a hypothetical situation wherein my neighbor's social worker is actually a Taliban spy? I know she's (the social worker) Muslim. I know her imam has said highly critical things about certain local political figures. I can hypothesize a scenario where she suicide bombs city hall.

Is that enough to have this woman's life turned inside out, to make her answer for things she may or may not have said years ago?

Since the mass delusion of religion must be treated as sane I reluctantly have to agree with you. In any other sphere talking to invisible beings who don't exist is treated as insanity.

There's also the possibility that he has changed, in which case a public retraction could actually increase his effectiveness at outreach. Good to ask the questions before instant judgment.

I was going to talk about Bob Newhart or Shelley Berman's one-man, one-side of a conversation comedy sketches, but then i realized that politics and on-stage-entertainment aren't really separate spheres...

Never mind.

He is unqualified for the position if he thinks evolution is a satanic lie!

I agree with this sentiment. This is moving into uncomfortable territory for me.

What part of evolution being a satanic lie makes him qualified to be in the field of health?

Honestly, I doubt he even believes most of the stuff he's preaching. He's probably just another huckster con-man pastor giving the people what they want to hear.

Is there something he's done on the job that leads you to believe he's acting on the notion that evolution is a satanic lie?

I haven't reviewed his files as of yet. The problem I have is that one needs to have a particular mindset, when it comes to critical thinking, to not only not believe that evolution is settled science, and not just that evolution is a scientific conspiracy, but that belief in evolution is satanic. Such a crap line of thinking to get that point certainly puts into grave doubt, his ability to judge other matters of biology and health.

Certainly this man's nuttery about science makes it hard for him to inspire confidence as a Director of Public Health.

Americans seem to have an obsession with seeing every issue in terms of free speech. To me it is a simple matter - if someone states they believe certain things to some people, and states opposed beliefs to other people, than that person is dishonest and hypocritical, and can not be trusted in any position of trust.

There are a series of tests for government employees, one of which is that the speech must not be disruptive to the performance of the government function. Given this guy is a fairly senior official, I suspect he'd lose on that one.
Only if they find that he takes God to work with him...

Uh, do you actually believe those worker luncheon prayer groups take all the religious oxygen out of workers before and after they participate?

A good scientist, Muslim, in our department when I was in our department some 12 years ago lost all upward mobility when it was found he participated in The Hajj on vacation. On the other side, but, probably meaningful here.

Well, if we discovered a series of videos wherein your neighbor decries the wicked sinfulness of city hall and describes how it needs to be removed from the earth and also she was working as a courier or something, so she regularly had access to city hall, the capacity to move vehicles and objects in and around it at will, etc, then yeah, it might be worth looking into whether or not she was planning on blowing up city hall.
