One of the world’s last isolated tribes has apparently emerged from the forest. Rachel Nuwer investigates whether there is anyone left who has never seen the outside world, and discovers that ‘first contacts’ are often cursed by death and disease.

In my fantasy world we are the uncontacted tribe that is joined by the rest of the civilised galaxy - with similar disparity in technological ability and understanding of the universe. From that point of view you are already living in your fantasy world.

Sometimes I wonder if the reason this hasn't happened already has nothing to do with the difficulty involved in crossing interstellar distances but is instead because we so horrify everyone else out there that they want nothing to do with us.
