A Racist Attack Shows How Whiteness Evolves

Two 17-year-old boys accused of harassing four African-American middle schoolgirls — using racial slurs and urinating on one of the victims — are facing charges including bias intimidation and lewdness.

The incident, which took place during an Oct. 18 high school football game in the New Jersey suburb of Lawrence Township and was partly captured on a video that circulated on social media, involves a cast of characters that has given some observers pause: Police say the boys are of Indian descent.

Instead of asking what the boys’ reported racial identity tells us about the nature of the attack, we should see the boys as enacting American whiteness through anti-black assault in a very traditional way. In doing so, the assailants are demonstrating how race is a social construct that people make through their actions. They show race in the making, and show how race is something we perform, not just something we are in our blood or in the color of our skin.

It's well known that people from South Asia hold no racial prejudice whatsoever; but when they come to the evil USA, "Whiteness" saps and impurifies all of their precious bodily fluids. How is Wokeness not a religion?

And people say The New York Times is great.

How hard is it to say, "These Indian boys are racist against blacks." Nothing to do with whiteness. Throughout history, blacks and Asians have despised each other as well.

Nothing makes me madder than racial crime and hatred. It's disgusting.

Woke derangement is the new black.

In Australia, there was a final rush of tourists climbing Uluru before climbing was banned permanently yesterday. The pictures of people climbing were commented on Twitter as "this is what white privilege looks like", even though Japanese tourists were the most likely to climb and white European visitors the least likely.

I can only hope that white people who hate "whiteness" so much follow through by not having any children.

New York Times has really gone downhill publishing such idiotic drivel.

On the other hand, if a white woman can be (feather) Indian, why can't (dot) Indians be white? Transitive property of Indianness.

The "traditional" owners consider it a sacred site and don't want people climbing it.
I bet it's like with Mauna Kea and the evilness of telescopes - a loud minority of so-called "traditional owners" is imposing their will onto others.

Yeah, I was climbing up on the roof of this neighborhood church yesterday and some loud minority of congregation insisted on imposing their will on me by telling me stay off their church.

Make up your mind: Is this about being woke (ie. being acutely aware of the role anti-black racism plays in the US and it's inter- and intra-national policies), or not?

(Or are you just mangling recent AAVE slang?)

Yes, the congregation have freehold title over private land and structures on that land, and you are a trespasser.

When you blame invisible power structures for the mundane, you’re practicing religion.

Racism isn't invisible.

I cannot read the full article and I do not know the full situation, but if your representation is accurate, I agree that there is also racism in India, that some Indians are bringing that to the US. So, maybe that is what this is.

However, to assume any Indian American acting seemingly racist is because of a stereotypical caste system is making a hasty generalization.

I am more interested in knowing the details of the incident and why the author makes the claim of white influence, than I am in being hyper-opinionated based on mere identity politics.

Perhaps someone could post such info.

The phrase "the boys as enacting American whiteness through anti-black assault in a very traditional way. " from the cited article makes it abundantly clear to the literate that that these assholes were acting like traditional white racists towards black people. It does not mean that non-white people are white. While one can disagree with the conclusion, to claim it means that people of color are white is just stupid.

"There are approximately 60,000 Africans of different nationalities residing in India. Many have faced racial discrimination at some point of time during their stay in the country. Majority of Africans who have come to reside in the country are either pursuing higher studies or working."

I have read a few reports, including the OP article, including viewing some phone camera footage of the incident itself, and I do not see anything put forward to bolster the suggestion that these non-white boys were emulating or adopting 'traditional' white racism against blacks. It appears to be the article writer's speculative opinion.

I see that the OP article writer, Nell Irvine Painter, is an African American, female historian and author of 'The History of White People'. She may have a point, or she may not. I don't see how she or we could actually know. It is possible that she is simply underestimating the extent of Indian racism against blacks which has little or nothing to do with white people.

The fact (it seems) that her interpretation is not backed up (by anything much or at all) would make me at least question the way she sees things, and if I was ever to read 'The History of White People' I might now do so with a bit of caution.

Imo, 'white bashing' is nowadays a cultural thing. As is (sometimes unnecessary) white guilt and self-flagellation. I have the feeling that I would take the view that a few posters here overstate it, but I would still agree with their general point in principle.

Given that the victims were girls and the perpetrators boys, there may also be a sexist aspect to this too.

No. They were acting like traditional South Asian racists, your anti-White animus notwithstanding.

Can you share a free, non-registration-required link to the article?

Can you share?

What generation American were the juniors/seniors in high school? Would it be logical to conclude that generations of them and their immediate ancestors integrated into American culture and unlearned racism or adapted it to use American words for blacks and to look for acceptance of a racial hierarchy by looking down on others?

It appears to be the article writer's speculative opinion.

I wouldn't doubt it, but I am not going to conclude things as I do not have required information to make an informed opinion.

It is also possible that she has a logical line of reasoning that you and I have not considered, having a lot more historical context or local context to the issue. You probably know more than me, having read the article. I am open-minded to both your assessment and hers until I have a basis for having a more informed opinion.

The fact (it seems) that her interpretation is not backed up (by anything much or at all) would make me at least question the way she sees things, and if I was ever to read 'The History of White People' I might now do so with a bit of caution.

And classist. All these things could be factors. I don't have enough info to say.

My suspect you know even less about South Asian racists than you do about white racists. But whatever makes you feel better.

It seems it will take an even more obvious example to convince people that wokeness is a religion. I can't imagine what that would have to be.

The above post instead of addressing points borders on attacking persons. Repeating claims while dismissing specific points with hand-waving is not only unhelpful and unsubstantiated, it also lessens the rational discussion.
