Athletics Is Said to Drive Culture of Rape, Drug Use at Air Force Academy
An investigation by The Gazette, of Colorado Springs, has revealed a culture of rampant sexual violence, cheating, and drug use—primarily by athletes—at the U.S. Air Force Academy. So extreme are the findings that the academy’s superintendent, Lt. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson, has asked the U.S. inspector general to launch a full investigation of the athletic department.

The Gazette’s wide-ranging exposé, informed by hundreds of pages of public records handed over by the academy, details athletes’ behavior at several parties, including allegations that women were drugged and raped.

U.S. Air Force Academy cadet athletes flouted the sacred honor code by committing sexual assaults, taking drugs, cheating and engaging in other misconduct at wild parties while the service academy focused on winning bowl games and attracting money from alumni and private sources in recent years, a Gazette investigation has found.

The findings are egregious enough that academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson told The Gazette that she has called for an Inspector General's investigation of the athletic department.
