Former Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke is planning a bid to unseat Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in 2022, according to a report.

The news comes on the heels of new polling that shows increasing support among likely voters for an O'Rourke run — with numbers from a Dallas Morning News survey showing that Abbott's hard-right turn in recent months has turned off voters in the state. O'Rourke has narrowed the polling gap to 37%-42%, up from 33%-45% in the same poll earlier this summer.
Political operatives in Texas told Axios that the onetime challenger to Sen. Ted Cruz plans to announce his gubernatorial run later this year.

This is going to be interesting. Texas has moved its primary up to March 1 to try to influence national politics. Abbott is going to be a lightening polls for a lot of dissatisfied Texans. Cruz is an opportunist who smells blood in the water. But Abbot has $55 million in campaign funds already. But if Cruz runs, he is rolling in campaign cash also. Beto denies his plan to run is firm, but he is calling a lot of important.Democrats nationwide.

March 1 is only 163 days from now. The battle between Abbott and Cruz may get very expensive with luck, making the final showdown a bit more even if Beto runs. Can Texas turn blue? will many GOP kooks take a fling at primarying GOP congressmen who are not crazy pants enough?

Florida's primaries are not until August.

I have no connection to this race (Canadian) but I have the opinion that O’Rourke is a rare decent person in politics. Curious to see how a guy like that does in Texas.

The problem with being a decent guy in Texas, it means the MAGA mob will label him as an extreme leftist. His support for competent gun laws has already gotten him labelled as "a gun grabber".

β did not impress me much during his presidential run. And his stance on guns will cost him some votes in Texas for sure.

Any sane stance loses you votes in Texas.

It is filled with American Taliban.

Oh, please! The Texas politician do a lot of very stupid things (more severe laws against consensual adult sex work was passed unanimously by both Republicans and Democrats there for example) but they are nowhere near the actual Taliban. Not even in the same ballpark.

O'Rourke will go from barely losing to Cruz to barely losing to Abbott. Texas has a decent length tradition of electing blithering idiots Governor that'll be hard to break.

They just don't have the freedom to do what they want to do like the Taliban.

Only difference except for the beards.

What are Texas' rules for a recall?

This is a very interesting question.

If a recall, under the same rules California Republicans used, were held in Texas O'Rourke seems the likeliest winner.

He wouldn't have to beat Abbott or Cruz. He'd just have to get the most votes in the "not Abbott" portion of the ballot.

Wouldn't that be a fun election to watch, from here in Indiana.

Matthew Dowd has announced he is running against Texas lieutenant Governor Ken Paxton as a Democrat. Dowd has moved from Democrat, to Republican, to Independent to Democrat again over the years. He was an operative who masterminded George W Bus's re-election and the election of Arnold Schwartzenegger as California's governor. A number of people have announced running against Paxton, including Republican George P. Bush. As are numerous Democrats.
