I read the Dali Lama's book on meditation and listened to hos interviews. . I'd say he has a true understanding. A true teacher in the classic sense. Bhuddism is about untangling yourself from the mental connections that bring you pain and misery.

Buddhism to me is far more practical l and based in reality than the Abrahamic traditions. Buddhism has traditional supernatural elements and extremists, but to me it based in practical reality and psychology. I see Buddha as as the first 'self help guru'. If the story is true he based his teaching and insights on his own experience and thinking. No divine inspiration. God's and demons are reflections of us humans.

“Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.” ~ Dalai Lamatps

“Our ultimate aim in seeking more wealth is a sense of satisfaction, of happiness. But the very basis of seeking more is a feeling of not having enough, a feeling of discontentment. That feeling of discontentment, of wanting more and more and more, doesn’t arise from the inherent desirability of the objects we are seeking but rather from our own mental state.” ~ Dalai Lama

This is exactly what attracts me to Buddhism. It's far more introspective than the Abrahamic religions and seems to be highly logical. At the very least it has much better arguments. Plus it's much more comfortable with admitting our ignorance rather than being certain about things. See, for example, the unanswered questions.

Inn Christianity it is the fault of the devil and evil spirits. In Buddhism you take control of how reality affairs you. No imaginary friends, so to speak.

Buddhism recognizes that life is suffering. It teaches to recognize it, accept it, suck it up, and deal with it rather than hope for some sky fairy to make it all better. The major cause of suffering is unfilled desires - the more we wish things were different, the more we suffer.
