A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage in connection with the felling of the famous Sycamore Gap tree in the north of England, police have said.

Officers arrested the teenager amid an outpouring of sadness over the destruction of the landmark, which had been a feature of the site at Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland for hundreds of years.

The boy is in custody and assisting officers with their inquiries, Northumbria police said.

The tree, believed to have been about 300 years old, was made famous when it appeared in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner.

Northumbria police said they believed the damage caused to the tree had been a deliberate act of vandalism.

Why can't kids deface places like Stone Mountain instead?
Or decapitate statues of assholes, like proper vandals?

Or piss on the shrubs.

Why go and kill an ancient thing?

Have you noticed how they can't pass any tree with low-hanging branches without pulling off a handful of leaves and throwing it at their buddies? It's the derangement of youth, subsection 21.7: low-hanging foliage compulsion syndrome.

At my 60s junior prom some of the students went around a neighborhood pulling up plants and a small tree for decorations.

Unfortunate for them on of the adult chaperones was from the neighborhood.

Around here graffiti is epidemic. Our maintenance guy paints it over on our bulding and witon a few days it is back.

There was a recent uproar among some people about a development builder cutting down an old tree. Native Americans wanted it declared a NA culture site, they say it was used for something in the past. Somebody stayed up in the tree for weeks.

It finally got cut down.

Some people apparently get obsessed with one single tree. It becomes a life and death struggle to save it.

A few years back there was a isingle tree that for some reason was subjected to repeated vandalism until it was damaged beyond recovery.
