By One Measure, Witches Outnumber Presbyterians in the United States

I enjoy seeing xtianity collapse, and while still arrant wooooo, wicca is at least set up to try to do good...

There’s a good chance self-described witches in the U.S. currently outnumber Presbyterians.


According to Quartz, which recently published a piece about the “explosive growth” in Wicca, that’s based on the fact that the Pew Research Center said in 2014 that Wiccans represented 0.4% of the population. That’s roughly 1.5 million people. And the religion is growing in numbers.


Meanwhile, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) pegged membership at 1,415,053 by the end of 2017.



The US witch population has seen an astronomical rise
From just 8,000 self-identifying Wiccans in 1990, practitioners of the religion now number over a million, according to surveys.


If it drives some conservative Christians nuts to think that hexes can be placed on various Republicans, then expect the number of witches to rise.

It's always been a bit tricky to estimate the Pagan population, due to its secrecy, easy coidentity with other religions, and commonly idiosyncratic definition; if anything, there are probably a lot more of us than is commonly realized.
