California department stores that sell children’s products such as toys and clothes would be prohibited from segregating them by gender, under a bill now being considered by lawmakers. The bill would do away with so-called “boys aisles” and “girls aisles,” by requiring that children’s products be offered in a single, gender neutral section, according to Low’s office. Going into effect in 2023, the bill would make retail stores that fail to comply with its provisions punishable by a fine of $1,000. A spokeswoman for Low’s office said that inspiration for the bill came from the 9-year-old daughter of one of Low’s staffers. The child told Low that she didn’t like how boy and girl sections were separated and that he should make a law against that.

Interesting. The homeless can shit in the street and publicly take intravenous drugs with impunity but a business cannot arrange their products for optimum sales and customer convenience.

Key phrase is "under a bill now being considered by lawmakers." There have been many crackpot bills proposed by lawmakers that never get passed. Get back to me if it actually passes.

I am personally quite supportive of these ideals but these sorts of laws are stupid and counterproductive.

Why limit it to children? Why not require stores to lump men's and women's clothing together? No half measures!

So the California lawmakers are taking legislative direction from 9 year olds now? Just like Warren wants her SecEd nominee vetted by a 9 year old "trans" kid? Dafuq?

Robert A. Heinlein in "And He Built a Crooked House" said:
Americans are considered crazy anywhere in the world.
They will usually concede a basis for the accusation but point to California as the focus of the
infection. Californians stoutly maintain that their bad reputation is derived solely from the acts of
the inhabitants of Los Angeles County. Angelenos will, when pressed, admit the charge but explain
hastily, "It's Hollywood. It's not our fault—we didn't ask for it; Hollywood just grew."
The people in Hollywood don't care; they glory in it.

That may have been true in the 1940s, but now we can stop with California at large. :)

If there's consumer demand for this, some shops will do it without being forced, and the consumers to whom it is important to have children's toys not separated by marketed gender can shop there.

Whether or not this bill becomes law, it does reflect the Woke preoccupation of denying reality.

Part of this bill is an attempt at consumer protections.

55.7. The Legislature finds and declares both of the following:

(a) Unjustified differences in similar products that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys can be more easily identified by the consumer if similar items are displayed closer to one another in one, undivided area of the retail sales floor.

(b) Keeping similar items that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys separated makes it more difficult for the consumer to compare the products...

I take it one of the 'unjustified differences' is price.

Great. The CA legislature thinks its citizens are idiots. How ever did people manage before?

It's nutty.

However, gender-neutral public restrooms would be reasonable.

Wait, you don't think that California's citizens are idiots? Well gosh, that might be the nicest thing a foreigner has ever implied about us!

But I'll grant this sounds like typical Sacramento nonsense. Democrats may talk a progressive game, but when granted power they mostly use it to micro-manage minor things and make "symbolic gestures" rather than proposing any serious changes to the neoliberal power structure. Most of California is a capitalist hell-hole with a socialist aesthetic; the rest goes capitalist hell-hole both wsys.
