The federal government acts like they want to reduce violence, but really they just want to watch certain people's heads implode.

Along with the Ruger Mini-14, the government will ban the AR-15 and similar types of firearms that have been used in a number of mass shootings in the United States, officials said. They added that the ban will also include the CZ Scorpion, the Swiss Arms Classic Green, the Beretta Cx4 Storm, the Robinson Armament XCR and the Sig Sauer SIG MCX, among others, as well as firearms that use the same platforms.

I think this is an example of what we see so often--the urge to "Do something!" about a problem, it doesn't really matter if the proposed action will actually do any good.

Since the alternative is "Don't do anything" about a problem, I will take the try "something." Especially since the "something" has worked in nearly every developed country in the world.

We have recent bad experiences with the "Don't do anything" about a problem and now more than 61,000 plus Americans are dead because of the laissez faire method of problem solving.

This is a very good decision. There's no need for anyone to have those types of weapons and it's good that there's finally a ban on them.

The problem with the "Do something!" approach is that you rarely actually accomplish much and often make the situation worse.

Hint: Mass shooters generally either run out of ammo or targets--the speed at which they can act rarely makes much difference. Handgun ammo is smaller & lighter, they can carry more.

Handguns are restricted or prohibited in Canada. Granted, the AR-15 is also currently restricted (as far as I know), but the point is only that Canadian law already treats handguns with increased regulation and limitations. The only non-restricted firearms I am aware of are rifles and shotguns which I could loosely describe as hunting or sporting weapons.

I am curious how this policy change might play out. Will the government allow current ownership to grandfather out? Will the RCMP have to get involved with organizations like the III%ers whose membership are likely to own some of the newly prohibited weapons? Will there be buybacks given how hard Covid-19 has been on the budget? Curious to see how this unfolds.

It is hard to imagine that we could make the situation worse.

So how would you solve the problem? Ban the private ownership of all guns? Barry Goldwater said it would take forty years to become effective. He said that in 1964.

The reason that you would ban the ownership of so-called assault weapons is that they are designed solely to kill human beings by individuals with little training. And to provide the maximum in the trade-off between weight and killing power in the ammunition. They are the perfect weapons for mass murders.

The problems with pistols are that they require a lot of training including practice and even in accomplished hands aren't very effective beyond ten yards. The ammunition doesn't have much-stopping power. I was shot with a 22 long rifle at thirty feet and didn't realize it, thinking that a bee had stung me.
