I think the point was just that it is easier to build on something in existence than to materialize something completely out of thin air.

It takes finesse to eclipse* your source material though.

*pun intended.

Yeah, not so much when you have the winning side pushing it at knifepoint for centuries.

The only sequel that outclassed the original IMO is Godfather II. God the Father II, not so much -- they put in all that hell shit, which pissed off the audience I was with. Although they did get rid of the circumcision requirement, which pleased some of the audience.
