I just installed the Crunchyroll app, and the choices are a bit overwhelming.

What's interesting on Crunchyroll that isn't on Netflix (or hasn't been on Netflix recently)?

Crunchyroll is free (as long as you don't mind ads), so I imagine this discussion would be worthwhile for others, not just myself. It's available through a web browser or mobile app. There's a premium subscription service of you don't want to look at ads.

One of my favorites is "Gate", magical gate opens in Tokyo sending out monsters and knights slaughtering people. The military kicks their ass, and is sent through to set up a base in the fantasy world on the other side.

"Rokka - Braves of the Six Flowers". Starts off looking like a standard fantasy story, but becomes something very different

Just finished first season of "Drifters", made by the same people who did "Hellsing Ultimate", so it gets bloody.

RWBY - an American made anime, the creator Monty Om must have been a big Final Fantasy fan. Quality gets noticeably better each season,

"No Game, No Life" if you don't mind some of the sex humor. Comedy series where two expert gamers are pulled into a world were the god of games beat out all the other gods, all conflicts are resolved by betting on games. So they set out to conquer that world

"Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon" comedy in a world that seems set up like a video game. Heroes get a patron god, then go into a dungeon to level up.

I just discovered Usagi Drop, and I'm hooked!

I watched a few episodes of RWBY a few years ago and didn't care for it. Does it get better? Eh, Avatar, the Last Airbender is still my favorite "American anime."

If you didn't care for the first few episodes, then you are not likely to warm up to the rest of the series. So just skip that one.

Oh, forgot about Assasination Classroom. That was a good series.

So what kinds of anime do you like?

My absolute favorite is Goat in the Shell' Stand Alone Complex (yes, I know it was made for Western audiences, is still my favorite, fuck off). I generally like action (especially if it's about something thematically), but I also like slice of life, or anything quirky.

I don't care for Mecha or harem crap or the ecchi stuff with endless gratuitous panty shots.

I'm up to episode six of Usagi Drop, and it keeps getting more and more adorable!

And yes, I know about the manga. Sounds creepy as fuck. I won't be reading that.

Loved Ghost in the Shell.

Grew up on giant robot films so I do enjoy some mecha. There is a remake of Starblazers that I can't wait to be available. Was watching videos for free through a funimation app, but they shut that down in favor of a subscription service. Some of the stuff they had isn't available on Crunchyroll

Blade and Soul sucked, as did BTOOOM. Someone recommended God Eater to me, but couldn't get past the first couple episodes, the special weapons each character wielded (with one hand) was easily twice as big as they were. Looked like action figures with badly scaled accessories.

I watched Demon King Daimao, and it was horrible, but I couldn't stop watching.

It couldn't decide it if was a harem show or an action show or a comedy, it had endless gratuitous panty shots of teenage schoolgirls (as the harem shows always seem to have), but the underlying theme was so obviously about atheism that I couldn't tear myself away despite how awful it was. The main character sees the gods as a mere control mechanism and sets out to kill them all, and you know he's right. He really is.

Oh, and because I'm so hooked on Usagi Drop, here's the opening theme song:

And yet Motoko with one pistol was so badass.

Thanks for the recommendation, Marc. Gate was good.

Glad you liked it. I like how it portrayed the JDSF, acting as the military should. Protect the innocent, and annihilate those that need it. My favorite scene was in the second season in the throne room.
