Somebody with more knowledge about these dolls than I have needs to explain if they are racist or not. I will be sure to become outraged (maybe even carry a sign or post a message on Tumblr or something) once the racistness has been confirmed.

I think they are kind of cute, and if there was no racial subtext I would want one.
Interestingly, I remember having two stuffed animal bunnies when I was a kid that had clasping arms also. That and the giant snake are the only ones I remember still.
Kind of harkens back to our monkey past in a very good way.
