Der Spiegel uncovers plot that created ISis

Duh. The author of the story discovered that ISIS's motives might not be purely religious ones. That politicians and military are using religion as an excuse to try to retake Iraq. Duh. Again.

Imagine, politicians cynical using religion to mask their true intentions. Thank gawd this doesn't happen in civilized countries.

Of course, ISIS is the Sunnis trying to take back Iraq from the Shias. There was never any doubt of that. Religion is an excuse, nothing more.

The religious myth is played up in the United States by politicians who need to keep their religious supporters afraid and who also need to obscure their role in handing Iraq to Iran's supporters, the Iraqi Shias, a blunder inside of a massive mistake.

From the article,

This speaks to a terrible irony of the 2003 American-led invasion of Iraq. The war was premised in part on the assertion that Saddam's regime was linked to anti-American jihadist terrorists. This was a falsehood. But the invasion made this falsehood true — and in more terrible fashion than we ever imagined possible.

Haji Bakr, desperate after 2003 to defeat the Americans and the new Shia-majority government, fought alongside Sunni extremists in Iraq. Later, he began constructing ISIS. As Der Spiegel's investigation found, he was able to use his knowledge of running an oppressive security state to build up ISIS into more than just another jihadist group.

For the instigators of such things religion is a tool, it's not driven by belief. It's belief for the guys actually carrying it out.

The invasion of Iraq created Isis.

It's military leadership is made up of former Iraqi military.

They are not driven by religion.

You realize each of your phrases is an absoulte generalization? Does that not make you doubt your own thoughts? Debate yourself. It works.

But... but.. Islamic Fascism!!!

You know what is the most depressing about this? That the founders of ISIS put much more planning into their atrocity than the W Admin did into Iraq.

I'm pondering if I look up your posting history, it may not reflect this face change. But I'm too lazy.

The people at the top want power. Islam is a means of obtaining it.

For the people who actually do it it's about Islam.

I've long said the only way to actually stop it is to stop the flow of money.

Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad existed well before the Iraq war. Its motives were very religious. Though with Islam politics and religion are two sides of the same coin.

It always is.

It was in Northen Ireland.
It was in Renaissance Spain.
It was in Imperial Russia.
It was in Renaissance England.
It was in the Holy Roman Empire.
Ity was in Imperial Japan.
It is in the US.
It is in Iran.

(If I continue it could take all day. Not only does religion suck, but it makes sucking even suckier even when it's something else that sucks with it in the same geographical space.)
