Authorities in Texas arrested a man Wednesday after he allegedly shot and killed his 3-year-old stepson when the boy refused to stop jumping on a bed.

This is ridiculous. I wonder what politics will come out of the details.

Pretty sure it's already illegal to shoot kids, even in Texas.

Well, first, I was talking about what politics might come out of this story, like stuff about religion (he's got a cross tattoo on his face), discussion of gun culture etc, race discussion because the shooter looks white and the victim doesn't, etc, etc. As more details emerge, the story grows, and more Internet talk occurs, I think this will be used as an example of something and more political talk.

How did this young guy get a gun? Did he buy it off the Internet? Was it legal? With his unprofessional tattoos, I gotta wonder if he's a convict even though he's just 18 allegedly. Maybe he's also got mental issues?

As to your specific, eye-rolling, sometimes it's also good to be proactive and preventive instead of reactive. Surely, you've heard of this.

So the teen thought yelling and punching would be bad ideas, because you shouldn't yell at kids or hit them... so he shot the kid. The literature may need to be updated to make it clear, at least to Texans, that shooting a kid is even worse than yelling at them.

I wonder if it occurred to this person that the kid jumping on the bed was really not that big of a deal.

Probably a capital crime too. They have the death penalty there. Wonder why the death penalty didn't stop him from shooting the kid?

Same reason that prison sentences don't stop those who actually commit rape, or traffic tickets don't stop those who run red lights, or fear of being arrested doesn't stop those who kill someone during a DUI, etc..
Should we conclude that since some people do these things despite existing punishments that all such punishments are useless and should be eliminated?
(hint: the answer is "No, that conclusion is based in fallacious reasoning which ignores the obvious fact that the people deterred by punished are among those who do not commit these acts rather than among those who do.")

Flick the switch on that prick.

I am from Texas and admit we have our faults, but I assure you this man is going to get what he deserves. That precious child!

While I don't want to go assigning the blame to a grieving mother who's just lost her child, she is the one who allowed a three year old to play in his room without giving him a loaded shotgun. This is about 80% her fault.

Of course it's a big deal - the kid could fall and break his neck. Thank God, that won't happen now.
