Edinburgh University renames David Hume Tower

I have read this forum long enough to tell that:

1. You regularly make assessments about your opponent's beliefs and/or intentions that their posts do not indicate, and further, even when they provided evidence of just the opposite. You do that persistently, over many years.
2. Your moral assessments are often wrong because of the above.
The irony of your responses is clearly lost on you. You regularly appear to believe your opinions or assessments are infallible when they are clearly wrong (like the two above).

Whether or not an observation or conclusion is accurate/correct or not is immaterial to the issue of whether or not someone has a basis for making such an observation or drawing a conclusion. Your claim that I had no basis is arrogant epistemlogical irrationality.

No, I'm familiar enough with the posts of the regular in this forum and with yours to know you had no basis (and I don't mean you don't have beliefs in your head that you think provide a basis; I'm saying you have no basis considering what the people you accuse actually say).
I am familiar enough with the posts of the regulars in this forum and with yours to know you have no basis for your mistaken belief and that no amount of reality based rational discussion will dissuade you from your mistaken conclusions and opinions. Since I do not wish to protract this pointless derail any longer, I will leave you your predictably wrong last words.

A campaign has been launched to change the name of two of the capital's top performing state schools - due to the founder's links to slavery. Hundreds of people have signed a petition to change the name of James Gillespie's primary and secondary schools - due to the founder making his fortune as an outcome of the slave trade. James Gillespie was born in 1726 and had a career as a very successful tobacco merchant, a product that came directly from the work of slaves. When he died, it was declared that some of his fortune should go towards building the school, which still stands to this day.

In this case, shouldn't the buildings be destroyed rather than just renamed ?

That's commie talk, TSwizzle.

If you destroy what brutal oppression and ruthless exploitation has built, we'll all go right back to living as penniless nomads in hunter-gatherer societies. Only hippies think that's a good idea.

The thing is that everything is so racialized. These same guys from the past would just as easily force a poor fellow Scot, Englishman and so on to do labor that would give them unrelenting pain from arthritic joint damage by the age of 35-40.

But no only BAME are important to these fucks.

I had a co-worker who would make sweeping statements and declarations in the break room like "So it's Black History Month, but if you had a White History Month people would be up in arms" or "NAACP stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, but if you had a National Association for the Advancement of White People they'd call you a racist".

It wasn't worth trying to have a discussion with him because he wasn't interested in discussing anything. He just wanted to complain about how oppressed Whites are in this White dominated society of ours. You appear to be doing the same: complaining that White people are being oppressed because some of the more disgraceful chapters in American and European history are getting some attention, and the treatment of non-whites by White historical figures is being acknowledged.

If they were sincere about cancelling slavers, they’d cancel Muhammad. But we know that ain’t happening.

What I am saying is that the descendants of poor native Brits and Scots have about as much whining (depending on your political ideology this is valid or invald) to do as the descendants of colonies.

By 'colonies' do you mean the colonists or the colonized?

What about the abducted who were taken by colonists to the colonies?

The "No, YOU" mentality is going strong tonight. Call out the egoic fragility of white men and all they've got is "No, YOU r teh fragilz!" Typical.

I read that Martin Luther king was a serial adulterer, and possibly worse. Down with Martin Luther King and all his statues! Rename all 1000 streets in the US named after him! Cleanse and purify!

Yeah, slavery and racism are just like sex scandals.

The building, which will be used as a student study space this academic year, will now be known as 40 George Square.

Personally I would've opted for Tower McTowerface. Clearly these Scottish academics Cultural Marxists are ashamed of their nation's identity.

Man, I'm so sad they are renaming this tower. I never would have known who Hume is if not for the fact a building is named after him, and he certainly wouldn't have appeared in any philosophy texts...

/s

Seriously though, I didn't even know the guy had anything named after him and I somehow know who he is and what he wrote just fine. He wrote a bunch of stuff about some things, most of which was wrong, and some of which was undercooked, and most disturbingly there are a load of "serious" philosophers who haven't managed to get past him.

Statues and buildings are probably best saved for those who DON'T have whole months and weeks devoted to discussing their ideas and lives for every student to ever study philosopy.
