"We're gonna fly you to another state."
"Wouldn't it be cheaper for you to hire people in that state?"
"So I'm going to be in another state without my own transportation. I'm not going to arrange my own accommodations. I don't have enough money in my pocket in case this all goes sideways. I'm going to be totally at the mercy of this stranger."

It's something every parent should teach their kid. It starts as they become independent, venturing out on their own. Stay in control of your situation. Have an exit plan. And you can carry this practice into adulthood with employers.

I'm all for protecting people from the unscrupulous but you have to know any legal action is going to be after the fact. In the interim, you have to cover your ass.

I agree. It almost certainly IS illegal, but is among the many Trumpist crimes that will never be prosecuted.

Shakespeare anticipated such woes in his play MacBeth:
